Birr is a municipality in the Canton of Aargau, Switzerland. Those interested in local history and architecture will find a range of historical themes here: Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi’s place of work, several monuments, and buildings with distinctive architectural features. The landscape is also part of the town’s character: the built-up area lies on the northern slope of the Kestenberg, while the Birrfeld stretches east of the railway line and the Bünztalstrasse.

Neuhof and the history of Pestalozzi

Neuhof in Birr was Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi’s (1746–1827) first place of work. With its construction in 1770–1771, an “experiment as a farmer and director of a poorhouse” began for him and his wife, Anna Schulthess. The history of Neuhof can also be traced through its later building phases: the Pestalozzi House is a Neoclassical building, rebuilt and extended in 1858 after the fire that destroyed Pestalozzi’s former residence, built in 1770–1771. Parts of the older masonry have been preserved.

The Pestalozzi House is regarded as an important witness to social and local history and forms part of the Neuhof ensemble. The manor house, built in 1820–1821, is also part of this ensemble. It is a building of regional significance and has been under full cantonal heritage protection since 5 July 1948. Its architecture is clearly defined: the two-storey Neoclassical building has a pointed-gabled central avant-corps, segmental-arched windows and doors, and a curved hipped roof. The buildings on the site also include a multi-purpose farm building, whose interior retains an intact high-post timber structure with smoke-blackened timbers.

Another historic building is the former small farmhouse, which probably dates from around 1686. It is one of the oldest building witnesses in the town and the last clearly preserved example of a thatched-roof house in Birr. Together with the buildings at Neuhof, it illustrates the variety of local architectural history, from farmhouses to Neoclassical manor houses.

Monuments and distinctive architecture

The Pestalozzi Monument was erected in 1846 to mark the 100th anniversary of Pestalozzi’s birth. Designed by architect Caspar Joseph Jeuch, it stands on the north façade. The monument is of national significance and is under full cantonal heritage protection. In 1906, Werner Büchly added a triptych-like sgraffito with three pictorial panels. The work thus brings together the period when the monument was created and a later artistic addition.

Birr Church also offers several specific points of interest for exploring local history. It is a rectangular hall church with a Late Gothic Käsbissen tower, probably dating from 1526–1528. Since 5 July 1948, the church has been under cantonal heritage protection, with full protection status. Its very good acoustics are another noteworthy feature for music enthusiasts.

The Bourbaki Monument makes a different stylistic statement. Alsatian sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdy (1834–1904) created the Art Nouveau bronze sculpture in 1899; it was ceremonially unveiled on 7 July 1901. It depicts Victoria, the winged goddess of victory: she holds a broken sword in her right hand and a lowered laurel wreath in her left. In the western part of Birr cemetery there is also a mass grave for 22 French soldiers who died at the military hospital in Schinznachbad.

Birrfeld, Kestenberg and getting around

Two local features are key to understanding the landscape. Birr’s built-up area lies on the northern slope of the Kestenberg. East of the railway line and the Bünztalstrasse, the Birrfeld has been preserved as one of the Canton of Aargau’s major grain-producing areas. Birr’s architectural and local history therefore sits alongside a landscape shaped by agriculture; both can shape how you experience the town.

Since 1995, Birr has had its own SBB railway stop with a bus terminal and Park+Ride facility. The Eigenamt bus network offers good connections from Birr to the railway stations in Brugg and Lenzburg, as well as connections to the SBB Zürich–Bern and Zürich–Basel lines, with onward connections by S-Bahn. Check the timetable for your specific journey to ensure that departures and connections fit your plans.

If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Birr, the history of Pestalozzi, the monuments, or the landscape could be your main focus. These themes offer different reasons to explore the town, without reducing them all to the same architectural or local history.
