Mönthal lies in the upper basin of the Ampfernhöhe, a little-known Jura pass from the Aare Valley to the Rhine Valley. The village is in the Canton of Aargau and the Brugg district, around six kilometres northwest of Brugg. The municipality is part of Jurapark Aargau, a regional nature park of national importance. The landscape and numerous walking and cycling trails give your stay a clear focus; there is also a Jurapark hike, the Cheisacher Observatory and local historical connections. For your planning, it is worth considering the time required and visiting arrangements for the different activities separately.

Walking and Cycling

The landscape around Mönthal offers numerous walking and cycling trails. The well-developed cycle path towards Remigen runs away from heavy traffic and is a useful landmark if you would like to explore by bike. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.

Hike and Access to the Cheisacher Tower

The Jurapark hike leads from Bürersteig via the Cheisacher Tower and observatory to Mönthal. It is 9.71 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours and 35 minutes. It is considered technically easy; the fitness requirements are moderate. The distance, approximate walking time and difficulty profile answer different planning questions: the technical rating is considered alongside the moderate fitness requirements. Conditions and trail signage can change; check the current situation before setting out.

Another route to the Cheisacher Tower starts at the Mönthal, Unterdorf bus stop and takes about an hour on foot; it is not signposted. This time estimate applies to the route from Unterdorf, not to the entire Jurapark hike from Bürersteig. Take the lack of signage into account when planning and check trail conditions before setting out.

Observatory and Group Activities

At the Cheisacher Observatory, you can observe distant planets, stars and galaxies. It opens to the public twice a year; visits for groups and schools can be booked year-round. For planning purposes, it makes a difference whether you are aiming for a public opening or a booked group or school visit. Confirm the current arrangements in advance.

The “Flora and Fauna” group activity includes an easy walk along field paths. Participants can get up close to pack goats, ponies and dogs; a picnic stop is included. The walk takes about two to three hours, and advance registration is required. Plan for both the approximate time window and registration.

Pack-goat hiking tours start in Mönthal and include leisurely or half-day hikes through the landscape of Aargau Jurapark. Booking arrangements can change; check the details before planning.

Church and Burghalde

Mönthal’s church was placed under cantonal heritage protection following its renovation in 1947. A fortified hilltop settlement dating from the Late Bronze Age is said to have stood on Burghalde, Mönthal’s local mountain. This brings together a specific renovation history and a possible prehistoric connection at the local mountain.

When planning your time, keep three different estimates in mind: about 2 hours and 35 minutes for the hike from Bürersteig to Mönthal, around an hour for the route from Unterdorf to the tower, and about two to three hours for “Flora and Fauna.” The first two estimates refer to different starting points and destinations; the group activity also requires advance registration.
