Discover Schinznach-Dorf
Accommodation in Schinznach-Dorf
Schinznach-Dorf lies about two kilometres west of the Aare, at the entrance to the Schenkenberg Valley and at the foot of a spur of the Folded Jura. Winegrowing, historic trails and village culture offer a variety of ways to spend your stay: the Vineyard Learning Trail, the Historic Circular Trail, and the church, mill and local history museum.
Winegrowing on the Vineyard Learning Trail
The three-kilometre Vineyard Learning Trail starts at the municipal building and leads to twelve information boards offering insights into winegrowing. The route runs along the sunny slopes of the Schenkenberg Valley, characterised by well-tended vineyards. It is well signposted and can be explored independently.
This easy themed trail involves 100 metres of ascent and 100 metres of descent; the walking time is about 54 minutes. If you would prefer to learn about the trail with an expert guide, you can arrange a guided tour through the Schinznach-Dorf Vine and Wine Friends Association.
Wine is also grown on the south-eastern slope of the Grund above Schinznach-Dorf. The Roman Vineyard of Schinznach-Dorf is a historic site in the canton of Aargau.
Historic trails and village history
The Historic Circular Trail around Schinznach-Dorf follows three historic transport routes: the Chalmweg, the hollow ways in the forest between Chalm and Heister, and the Alte Gasse. Three information boards cover local history and nature. The circular trail starts at the Schinznach Dorf, Oberdorf bus stop and is signposted throughout. While the Vineyard Learning Trail introduces visitors to winegrowing, this route focuses on former transport routes and local history.
From Brugg AG, the Schinznach-Dorf, Post stop can be reached by bus route 371. Check the timetable for your travel date.
Church, mill and museum
The village church of Schinznach-Dorf dates back to the 13th century. In 1779, its nave was demolished and rebuilt in the Baroque style seen today. The church is open to visitors free of charge during opening hours; check these times before your visit.
The Mittlere Mühle is the only one of the three original mills in Schinznach-Dorf that is still operational. It was first mentioned in official records in 1317. The Mittlere Mühle Museum offers the programme “From Grain to Bread” year-round, including bread baking and a guided tour of the mill. The programme can be booked; check the schedule in advance.
The Schinznach-Dorf Local History Museum focuses on rural culture in the Schenkenberg Valley and Aargau. Its exhibitions cover farming and domestic life, winegrowing, straw plaiting, stove and farmhouse pottery, and education. The collection also includes well-preserved fossils of sea urchins, starfish and other marine animals.
Landscape between the village and the Aare
Between Schinznach-Dorf and the Aare lies the flat, agriculturally used Schinznacherfeld, which includes a gravel pit. At a weir, the Aare divides into two branches. About a quarter of the four-kilometre-long Schacheninsel lies within the municipal boundaries of Schinznach-Dorf.
The municipality of Schinznach operates an outdoor swimming pool together with Lupfig (the village of Scherz), Brugg and Veltheim an der Aare. The facility has a wide-wave slide and diving boards at heights of one and three metres. It operates seasonally; check the season dates before planning your visit to the pool.
