In Kulm, scenic hiking trails meet protected river landscapes, historic buildings and seasonal leisure activities. This gives you different ways to shape your stay: perhaps around individual stages of the Höhenweg aargauSüd, museums and architectural heritage, or destinations whose offerings are tied to a particular season. Which of these appeals to you most can also influence your choice of accommodation.

Landscape and hiking in Kulm

The Wyna, the Moos and the surrounding hills are among the landscapes of cantonal importance. With its banks lined by hedgerows, the Wyna is now an important nature reserve. If you’d like to experience the landscape on foot, the Höhenweg aargauSüd offers a route with eight varied stages. It leads through scenic highlands, quiet forests and villages along the Wyna Valley. The views stretch from the Jura across the Swiss Plateau to the Alps.

Higher elevations offering hiking opportunities and panoramic views include Stierenberg at 872 metres, Hochwacht at 788 metres and Homberg at 787 metres. Good public transport connections make it easy to plan the stages of the Höhenweg flexibly and enjoy them as day hikes. Check current connections when planning your trip. Homberg is also accessible by the Seetalbahn and Wynentalbahn; you can combine your journey with a scheduled boat service on Lake Hallwil.

One specific stage of the Höhenweg aargauSüd runs from Dürrenäsch to Teufenthal. It passes Schloss Liebegg and the Gränichen sandstone caves, and ends at Teufenthal railway station. When planning, you can take both the route and the stage’s endpoint into account. Before setting out, check the current route and suitable timetables.

Experiences for different interests

The Teufenthal adventure trail combines a local legend with activity along the way: signs tell the old story of Schloss Liebegg and Trostburg in seven parts. There are seven marble runs along the trail. The route is considered easy to walk and can be used with an all-terrain stroller. This combination makes it a practical option if you’re looking for a shorter, playfully designed walk.

The towns in the district also offer different points of interest for culture enthusiasts. In Menziken stands the Sagi, built by Jakob Merz in 1801 and now a protected historic building. Its features include an undershot waterwheel and a single-blade saw with an output of around 4 kW. The Menziken Tobacco Museum explores the history of tobacco growing and cigar production in the Wyna Valley. On display are machines, tools and objects used to make cigars and stumps; packaging, labels and advertising materials complement the collections.

In Gontenschwil, the village museum is housed in a former rectory dating from 1592. If you’d rather spend time outdoors, Buholz has an open forest shelter, a fire pit and seating. The Reformed Church of Beinwil am See offers another glimpse into local architectural and artistic history: Zurich architect Meili designed it in 1935 and built it to his plans. Paintings by Beinwil artists Paul Eichenberger and Eugen Maurer are on the north side of the nave. The church is now protected as a cantonal heritage site and has step-free access through the side door. Check the latest access information before your visit.

Seasonal options when planning your trip

Some leisure activities are only available at certain times. The beach lido in Beinwil am See operates from May to September; check the current opening dates before visiting. The Oberwynental ice rink offers public skating, recreational ice hockey and figure skating, and skates are available to rent. Since these activities are seasonal, it’s worth checking the information for the current season.

If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, first decide which experiences will shape your plans: multi-day hikes or individual day stages, landscapes and views, museum visits or seasonal leisure activities.
