Frick: Dinosaur Finds, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Frick
Frick combines the landscape of the Sissle valley basin with fascinating insights into dinosaur history and a diverse cultural offering. The area around the town offers a variety of ways to spend your stay: visit the dinosaur museum and dinosaur trail, hike in the region, or explore the village’s architectural history and events.
Landscape and orientation
Frick lies in the broad valley basin of the Sissle, at an elevation of around 350 metres above sea level. Forested tableland hills of the Jura surround the town and shape its scenic setting. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, the season is worth considering, too: spring, when the cherry trees blossom, is considered a particularly beautiful time for hiking.
Discover Frick’s dinosaurs
The Frick Dinosaur Museum is the only museum in Switzerland to display a complete skeleton of the dinosaur Plateosaurus. It was recovered from a clay pit near Frick. You can also see numerous fossils, while a film recounts the discovery of Frick’s dinosaurs. The museum focuses both on a particular find and on the story of its discovery.
You can explore the finds outside the museum, too. The dinosaur trail runs through Frick and shares interesting facts about Frick’s dinosaur finds and dinosaurs in general at eight information pillars. The route connects the subject with a walk through the town, with the pillars marking individual information points along the trail.
At the specially designated fossil-hunting area, you can search for fossils in fossil-bearing rock fragments at any time, without registering. Please observe the applicable tool and safety rules. The museum is particularly suited to families and school classes; guided tours are available for groups.
Hiking in Frick and the region
The Fricktaler Höhenweg is a 59-kilometre hiking route from Rheinfelden via Frick to Mettau. It differs in scale from the dinosaur trail, which runs through Frick and covers a specific subject at eight information pillars. If you are interested in the Höhenweg, Frick is one of the towns along its route. For spring hikes, the cherry-blossom season stands out as a particularly beautiful time of year.
Baroque architecture and culture
Built in 1716, the Baroque parish church of St Peter and Paul is a landmark visible from far away and is among the cantonally protected cultural properties. Baroque architecture also characterises the building housing the Kornhauskeller: the striking structure dates from 1719 and was previously used as an administrative office, an almshouse and a district school.
The Kornhauskeller hosts several cultural events each year, including jazz and world music concerts, classical soirées, satire evenings, readings and art exhibitions. The programme ranges from music and literature to visual art; individual events may change.
Leisure and rest
Vitamare’s leisure and recreation area includes a 70-metre water slide, a current channel, a whirlpool and a play area. Check the latest information about the facilities before your visit. The Wälchligarten is set up as a rest area for visitor groups and is intended for public use.
Market dates and timetable
According to the municipal calendar, accessed on 26 August 2026, Frick had the following markets scheduled for 2027: a carnival market on 8 February, a Whitsun market on 17 May, a summer market on 30 August, a St Martin’s market on 8 November and a Christmas market on 4 December. If you are planning to visit a market, check the date against the current calendar beforehand.
SBB trains to Zurich and Basel run every half hour; there are more than 100 bus departures daily. Check the current timetable when planning your journey. This lets you coordinate your arrival with the focus of your stay, whether that is dinosaur finds, culture or hiking.
