Discover Lenzburg: Castle, Museums and Trails
Accommodation in Lenzburg
Lenzburg combines a distinctive castle history with museums covering different periods and themes, as well as several local trails. If you are looking for a hotel in Lenzburg, you can plan your stay around whether you want to focus on historical exhibitions, contemporary issues, a stroll through the old town or outdoor activities. The offerings vary in time period, content and way of exploring.
Castle History and Museums
Lenzburg Castle is one of the oldest hilltop castles in Switzerland. The museum in the castle takes visitors through 1,000 years of castle history in its exhibitions, from the Late Middle Ages through the Renaissance and Baroque periods to the 20th century. This sequence provides a broad historical timeframe for a visit and explores the castle’s development across several eras.
The Burghalde Museum focuses on different historical aspects. A tour of the exhibition and historic rooms conveys Lenzburg’s history from a Roman village to a modern city. The museum also displays selected objects from 15,000 years of cultural history. The history of the city and a long cultural history are presented side by side, without requiring you to focus on just one era.
The Museum of Icons Switzerland focuses on Eastern Christian art. It is Switzerland’s only permanent icon exhibition and explores the subject across four rooms. A film introduction, a painting studio and listening stations complement the exhibition. The museums therefore also differ in their approach: Lenzburg Castle and Burghalde explore broader historical arcs, while the Museum of Icons focuses on a particular artistic tradition.
Contemporary Issues at the Stapferhaus
The Stapferhaus develops large-scale exhibitions on contemporary issues, including time, money, home, nature and health. Its exhibition spaces engage visitors on different levels: through touch and movement, seeing and hearing, as well as experience and discussion. This gives the venue a different focus from the historical collections. The Stapferhaus is just a few minutes’ walk from Lenzburg railway station.
Old Town, Cafés and Markets
Lenzburg’s old town invites you to browse its cafés and shops. The imposing castle and picturesque parks also shape the city’s character. Festivals and markets are held regularly in Lenzburg. If you want to plan your trip around a particular event, check the specific dates in advance.
Industrial History Along a Route
The IndustriekulTour Aabach is a smartphone tour that lets you experience the industrial history of the canton of Aargau at original sites. Over two kilometres, it runs from today’s Müllerhaus along the Aabach, via Hünerwadelplatz and the town hall, to Lenzburg town church. The tour thus connects the theme of industrial history with several named stops. Its distance and described route give you a clear guide to this walk.
Trails and Getting Around
The Erlebnis Lenzburg discovery trail highlights Schloss and Goffersberg for their natural and cultural features. Its stops are marked on a map but are not signposted on site, so include the map when finding your way. Signposting is different on the Nordic walking trail, which offers two well-marked routes. They include nature along the Aabach, fresh air and the cool shade of the forest, as well as views of the castle and the panorama from the Gofi. On-site wayfinding is therefore one concrete difference between the two trails.
Other local trails include the Garden Trail and the Nature and Culture Trail, with additional routes adding to the selection. You can choose between a route with a specifically described course, trails with nature and cultural themes, and the signposted Nordic walking routes, while keeping their differing wayfinding information in mind.
