Discover Hundwil: Hiking and History
Accommodation in Hundwil
A stay in Hundwil brings together hiking trails, water and local history. The village is in the hinterland of the Swiss canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, on the road between Herisau and Appenzell. The rural settlement area includes the village of Hundwil, numerous hamlets, isolated farms and alpine pastures. The municipality also includes the 2,502-metre-high Säntis and the valley station of the Schwägalp–Säntis cable car.
Hiking, Water and Bridges
A well-developed network of hiking trails leads to idyllic spots, viewpoints and places to relax in Hundwil. A leisurely hike takes you to the Hundwiler Höhe. At the water trail, you can see and hear various bird species—so watching and listening are among the experiences on offer here.
Guided tours of the water trail and drinking water treatment plant are available for groups and school classes by prior arrangement. They last 60 to 90 minutes. Booking in advance and allowing for the duration will help you plan this tour as part of your stay.
A covered historic wooden bridge crosses the Urnäsch. It is known as the “Talking Bridge” because of the many sayings inscribed on its beams. The Grubenmann Bridge is also called the “Talking Bridge”; it connects the hiking trail between Herisau and Hundwil. The bridges thus bring together local history and the routes that link Hundwil with the surrounding area.
Landsgemeinde and Local History
Along with Trogen, Hundwil was one of the two historic Landsgemeinde venues in Appenzell Ausserrhoden. The Landsgemeinde assemblies took place alternately in the two villages. In Hundwil, people gathered in the meadow surrounded by the church and village houses; the last Landsgemeinde there was held on 25 April 1997.
The village’s church history also goes back a long way: Hundwil has had a church tradition since at least 1297. Before 1380, the church was elevated to an independent parish church dedicated to Saint Martin. Hundwil adopted the Reformation in 1525 and played a leading role within the association of Appenzell’s Rhoden at the time. These dates provide different points of reference in the village’s history—from its early church tradition to political and religious change.
The “Krone” is considered the oldest house in the centre of Hundwil. According to the inscription on its ridge beam, it dates from 1599; inside is a small inn room with fully painted walls and ceiling. The building adds a glimpse of the historic architecture of the village centre to the story of the assembly meadow and church.
Autumn Traditions and Craftsmanship
In autumn, livestock shows take place after farmers return from the alpine pastures with their cows. The most beautiful and highest-performing cows receive prizes, followed by a celebration with dancing and singing. Dates may vary, so it is worth checking them before making specific plans.
At the “Visit a Weissküfer” experience, visitors learn about traditional craftsmanship. They see how wooden milk pails are made and carve their own small wooden board to take home. If you would like to plan this activity, check the current options in advance, as the details may change.
