Oberwil lies in the Leimental valley on the eastern slope of Bielhübel, with foothills extending towards Bruderholz, at an elevation of around 316 metres. The municipality covers 7.89 km². Around 45 percent is agricultural land, 20 percent is forest and 34 percent is built-up area. Fields, patches of woodland and residential neighbourhoods shape the gently rolling landscape. Highlights for your trip include protected habitats, seasonal nature and trails with different themes.

Natural Environment and Seasonal Highlights

The Ziegelei Oberwil nature reserve is maintained and promoted as an amphibian spawning site of national importance and a stopover for migratory birds of regional importance. It is particularly important as a stopover for waders. The nature reserve includes a pond landscape that benefits various toads, frogs and newts. The Ziegelei quarry was added to the federal inventory of amphibian spawning sites of national importance in 1994.

A seasonal natural highlight can be found at Bernhardsberg near Oberwil: each year in late March or early April, the vineyard tulip paradise displays a carpet of flowering vineyard tulips. The vineyard tulip is a native wild tulip and is listed as an endangered species on the Red List. If you would like to see it in bloom, you can take this into account when planning your trip. From the Oberwil tram stop, the paradise can be reached via a 1.4 km hiking trail towards Biel-Benken. From Basel SBB railway station, you can travel on tram line 10 towards Flüh/Rodersdorf. The line runs along the Rodersdorf – Oberwil – Basel SBB – Dornach route. Check the current timetable and route before travelling.

Walks with Different Themes

The Schnägge Trail is an interactive village walk through Oberwil BL and the surrounding area. Its family route is 2 km long. The trail is free and accessible at any time; check the latest information before setting out.

The Geschichtspfad Leimental PLUS (Leimental History Trail PLUS) runs through Oberwil, Allschwil and Schönenbuch. Along the way, a smartphone quiz shares interesting facts about the region’s history. The two experiences offer different highlights: the Schnägge Trail is designed as a village walk, while the history of the region and a route through three municipalities are the focus of the Geschichtspfad.

Church, Exhibition Space and Local History

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul has been protected by the canton since 1969 and is also protected at federal level. An archaeological site lies beneath the church. It includes a Late Roman building dating from around 400, probably a temple. The site was left accessible beneath a concrete roof. If you would like to visit the site specifically, check in advance how to access it.

Archaeological traces in the municipality date from prehistoric times through the Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman period to the Early Middle Ages, from which pottery kilns have also been discovered. Oberwil was first mentioned in a document around 1100 under the name “Oberwilre”.

Another historic building is the SprĂĽtzehĂĽsli, built by the municipality of Oberwil in 1827. Today, it is used mainly as an exhibition space. Its old bell still rings in the opening of every vernissage. If you would like to visit a particular exhibition, check the current programme.
