History and Exhibitions

The museum in the Bürgerhaus Pratteln takes visitors on a journey through 300,000 years of Pratteln’s history. It is about a 15-minute walk from Pratteln railway station and about a 10-minute walk from the “Pratteln Schlossstrasse” tram stop. You can plan your route according to your starting point without confusing the approximate walking times.

The Salt Chamber exhibition spans 15 rooms on two floors. Its subject matter ranges from the beginnings of salt extraction and trade to modern industrial salt processing. One of its highlights is a view into an exposed borehole. The exhibition thus links the early stages of salt extraction with its modern industrial processing.

Two different time scales offer useful historical context: the museum presents a view of 300,000 years of Pratteln’s history, while Pratteln is first mentioned around 1102–1103 under the name Bratello. In addition, the entire village of Pratteln is included in the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites. These historical references complement the exhibitions with the town’s early name history and heritage protection. The Weiherschloss in Pratteln was built around 1275 by the noble family of the Lords of Eptingen. This provides a tangible architectural link to the town’s history.
