Maisprach: Winegrowing, Village History and Sonnenberg Tower
Accommodation in Maisprach
Maisprach lies in a valley basin on the southern slope of Sonnenberg and is considered the northernmost village in the Oberbaselbiet. For trip planning, local history, winegrowing and paths through the vineyards offer different points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Maisprach, you can see which of these themes suit your travel plans.
Village Square and Local History
The village square fountain stands almost in the middle of Maisprach’s village square. Dating from 1841, it is one of the Baselbiet’s notable square fountains from the first half of the 19th century. The parish church of St. Mary was built in 1291; its tower and choir were rebuilt in 1711. These dates refer to different construction phases: 1711 marks the rebuilding of the tower and choir, not the construction of the entire church.
Maisprach’s archaeological and medieval heritage is associated with the remains of a manor, a royal estate believed to have been established there, and the medieval knights of Maisprach. The remains of the main building now lie below the church, within the cemetery wall. Thus, alongside the precise dates for the fountain and church, medieval history and archaeological remains also form part of the village’s history.
Winegrowing and Regional Products
Winegrowing is important to the municipality of Maisprach; grapes appear on its official coat of arms. Grapes grow across 15 hectares of sun-drenched vineyards in the winegrowing area. The vineyard area may change over time. You can buy wines made from grapes grown in this area directly from the respective producers.
In August 2026, Weinbau Talhof listed a bookable experience featuring a tasting of local wines followed by an aperitif with regional products. Check current availability before making plans. This allows you to include the wine tasting and aperitif as a combined activity.
Trails and Views
The Syydebändel & Rebenweg starts in Maisprach and crosses the southern vineyard slopes to Buus. There, the route descends to the main road and then goes around Staufen Hill to Wintersingen. Six information panels provide details about winegrowing by the Syydebändel vintners. Winegrowing is therefore not only part of the village’s profile, but also explicitly covered by information along the trail. Local conditions may change; check them before your hike.
The Sunnebärg Challenge starts in the village square and ends at the Sunnebärg Tower. A QR code at the starting point lets you start the timer on your phone. The village square is the specific starting point of the challenge, while the tower marks its finish.
The Sonnenberg Tower is owned by the municipalities of Magden, Maisprach, Möhlin, Rheinfelden and Zeiningen. The viewing platform of the 22-metre-high tower is freely accessible all year round. Climbing its 99 wooden steps leads to a beautiful panoramic view.
Getting There and Planning Your Time
Bus 100 travels from Gelterkinden to the Maisprach Dorf stop in 17 minutes. From this stop, you can reach the Sonnenberg Tower on foot in about an hour or by bicycle in 20 minutes. For planning purposes, you can treat the bus journey and the walk or ride from the stop as separate time segments. Check the latest bus connections before setting off.
