Aarwangen combines a layered castle history with the landscape along the Aare, opportunities to observe nature and whisky-related experiences. The castle tells the story of how the town has changed; at Höchbachweiher and on Muniberg, other aspects of the surrounding area take centre stage. This makes it easy to plan a stay around a wide range of interests.

Aarwangen Castle and the history of the river

Aarwangen developed from a fortified customs crossing over the Aare, which was later linked to a bridge, a customs post and a castle. Aarwangen Castle was built around 1266 to keep watch over the important Aare bridge. Over the centuries, it changed from a noble residence to a Bernese administrative seat and then to a modern administrative building with offices, a court and a prison.

The former transport of goods is also part of the history of the Aare bridge: ships carrying large barrels of wine from Burgundy and western Switzerland along the waterway, or unloading grain, used to dock there. The bridge complex comprises a road and pedestrian bridge dating from 1997 and an iron truss railway bridge dating from 1907.

The church and historic buildings offer further insights into architectural and cultural history. The church has 20 historically significant coloured heraldic stained-glass windows and is one of the first rural churches in the Canton of Bern to have been newly built for Reformed worship. The former administrative office is a solid, classically styled building with a hipped roof, built between 1830 and 1832. The former boys’ reformatory is housed in the so-called New Granary, built in 1762.

Exhibitions and experiences at the castle

The exhibition at the castle explores its history. An interactive robotic arm showcases products from regional businesses. The Children’s Castle offers a imaginatively designed trail for young visitors; two escape room experiences take visitors into former prison cells. A virtual reality experience recreates the historically documented Gugler raid of 1375. The activities offer a range of experiences—from castle history and regional products to puzzles and a digital exploration of a historical event.

Ponds, the Aare riverbank and views

Höchbachweiher consists of three ponds fed by a stream that has been uncovered. They provide suitable habitats for amphibians, dragonflies and other aquatic life. A platform enables guided observation and access to the ponds for nature encounters. Those who would rather focus on the river than smaller bodies of water will find largely natural riverbanks along the Aare. A route from Aarwangen follows the riverbank through a protected river landscape with islands, alluvial forests and waterbirds.

The high-altitude trail on Muniberg is ideal for hiking; from Muniberg, the views extend as far as the Alps. Aarwangen thus offers a variety of nature experiences: observing wildlife at the ponds, following a route through the river landscape and taking a high-altitude trail with views of the Alps.

Whisky and local production

Langatun Distillery produces handcrafted single malts in the granary in Aarwangen, built in 1616. Distillery tours with whisky tastings are available by prior arrangement. Those who want to learn more about the production process can attend a distilling seminar: participants learn how whisky goes from grain to bottle and can work in the distillery themselves. At the “Blend your own Langatun” seminar, they create a whisky to their own specifications and bottle their own blend. Both seminars take place on selected dates or by arrangement. The annual Langatun Whisky Day has been a regular fixture in the distillery’s programme for over 15 years.
