The town’s roots date back to 1180; agriculture, crafts and its location on the Aare all contributed to its development. If you are looking for a hotel, you can use these themes as a guide to the character of your stay. Check the location and amenities in the details of each offer. The historic buildings and the town’s connection to the Aare offer two distinct points of interest: architectural history, or riverside paths and swimming facilities.

Church and castle: different periods in time

Muri Church brings together several periods in time: its oldest traces date from the 12th century, and it was formerly dedicated to Saint Michael. The neo-Gothic church tower dates from 1881 and was donated by Count Pourtalès. From the “Muri” tram stop, it is a one-minute walk to the church. The adjective “neo-Gothic” refers to the later revival of Gothic forms and distinguishes the tower chronologically from the oldest traces of the church building.

Muri Castle represents a different period: its oldest traces date back to the 16th century. The complex includes an orangery from the 18th or 19th century. In chronological terms, the church’s earliest traces predate those of the castle by several centuries; the orangery represents a later construction phase of the castle complex.

Crossings and paths along the Aare

The Auguet Bridge provides pedestrians and cyclists with a crossing over the Aare and connects Muri with Belp. The covered wooden bridge in Auguet was rebuilt in 1974 after being relocated five kilometres downstream. Its connection to Belp and the change to its location are two distinct aspects of the bridge’s history.

At regional level, walking and hiking trails follow the Aare and pass through gently rolling hills. One specific route to Muribad is the riverside path that runs inland: it provides direct access to the bathing area and connects it with the Auguet Bridge. Check trail conditions before your visit. The regional trails cover a wider hiking area, while the riverside path provides a specific connection between Muribad and the Auguet Bridge.

The Bodenacker ferry is the only ferry between Thun and Bern. Bicycles and pushchairs can be taken on board. Safety conditions may affect operations, so check the current ferry service before crossing.

Swimming in a pool and in the Aare

The Aare swimming area has a 25-metre pool with a waterslide. Swimming in the Aare is also possible, but river swimming is suitable only for strong swimmers. For planning purposes, these are two different ways to swim: a pool with a waterslide, and river swimming subject to the explicitly stated swimming ability requirement.
