The Heimiswil-Kaltacker QR Story Trail has been an activity trail in Kaltacker since 1 May 2024. A story for children and their accompanying adults unfolds across ten numbered QR stations. The trail thus combines a story with a sequence of clearly numbered stations.

Lueg: memorial, cycle route and hiking trails

The Lueg Memorial commemorates 54 Bernese cavalrymen who died during the Spanish flu; it was erected in 1921. Lueg is also the highest point on the Burgdorf East 899 cycle route. On foot, the Lueg hiking trail runs through Kaltacker to Burgdorf. The memorial can be reached via the Burgdorf–Kaltacker–Lueg–Junkholz–Affoltern hiking trail. Another hiking route runs from Affoltern i. E. via Lueg, Rachisberg and Otzenberg to Hasle-Rüegsau.

When planning your visit, you can compare the routes to the memorial by their different starting points. By public transport, the route goes via the «Lueg» stop, followed by a walk of about 15 minutes. There is a car park below the viewpoint by the memorial. From there, a steep uphill walk of about five minutes is required. The approximate times therefore refer to different sections; in particular, the climb from the car park is described as steep. If you use public transport, check the timetable in advance.

Local history in Kaltacker

The Haus Hirschen Kaltacker has been referred to as an inn since 1689. The building was rebuilt after the old house burned down in 1804. The dates therefore mark two different historical aspects: its early designation as an inn and its later reconstruction. Kaltacker is also home to the Stalder brothers’ nail forge, another tangible link to local history.

Landscape, elevations and scale

The municipality of Heimiswil encompasses part of the hilly landscape east of the Emmental. The Heimiswilgraben is a characteristic valley in the molasse hills east of the Emmental. The main valley of Heimiswil is about six kilometres long and joins the Emmental above Burgdorf. The ridges on the northwestern and northern sides of the Heimiswilgraben average 700 to 800 metres in elevation, while those on the southeastern side are at 800 to 850 metres. Forest and pastureland predominate at higher elevations in Heimiswil.

The yew tree in Gerstler, Kaltacker, is traditionally referred to as a «1,000-year-old rarity»; this age is not a precise scientific determination.
