Aeschi Bei Spiez: Hiking Trails, Winter Sports and Village History
Accommodation in Aeschi Bei Spiez
Aeschi Bei Spiez is best explored on foot: its network of hiking trails ranges from leisurely walks to mountain tours lasting up to seven hours. The trails are well marked and offer views of Lake Thun and the surrounding mountains. For planning, the trail’s character, duration and time of year are useful distinctions.
Hiking Trails and Viewpoints
The Niesenbänkli is at the highest point of the Bänkli circular trail. From there, you can see across the Kandertal, the Niesen range, and Lakes Thun and Brienz. Numerous benches line the circular trail, including specially designed ones where you can take a break. The viewpoint and seating make this trail a way to experience the landscape in stages.
The village circular trail is easy and can be walked with a stroller. It starts and ends at the village square by the Aeschi, Post bus stop. Another option is the easy panoramic circular hike: it is 7.4 kilometres long, passes through Aeschiried and Suldhalten, and starts and ends at the Aeschi b. Spiez, Post bus stop. The circular trails therefore differ both in their stated level of difficulty and in their specified length and named intermediate locations.
Pochtenfall in the Suldtal can be reached on foot via a short circular trail in 15 minutes. The Suldtal nature reserve also offers opportunities for hiking and cycling. It is accessible from early May to the end of October; check the conditions for your visit before travelling.
Winter Trails and Snow Activities
In winters with abundant snow, Aeschi’s 35 kilometres of cross-country ski trails extend as far as Unterer Obersuld. They are suitable for both classic and skating techniques. The winter sports area in Aeschi is considered family-friendly and has two ski lifts and two practice lifts. Two snowshoe routes are also marked. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and lift operations are activities that depend on snow conditions.
The local winter hiking trail is 12 kilometres long and runs from Aeschi to Aeschiried. It follows the Bänkli circular trail, but on a slightly different route, and is accessible only in winter. If you plan to take this route, check snow and trail conditions before setting out.
Church and Local History
Aeschi Church dates back to the 10th century and is one of the so-called Twelve Churches of Lake Thun. Fragments of wall paintings in al secco technique have been preserved in the late Gothic rectangular choir. The paintings probably date from the first half of the 14th century. The church thus brings together a long history and a tangible glimpse of medieval painting. It is open continuously. If you wish to visit the church for a specific occasion, check access on site.
Alpine Cheese Dairy and Bread Baking
During a seasonal visit to the alpine cheese dairy, which requires a reservation, you can watch alpine cheese being made and sample the finished product. As the offer is seasonal and requires a reservation, it is advisable to check the current dates in advance.
At the old OfehĂĽsi, guided tours show how bread is baked in the oven. Flammkuchen and a drink are served while the bread is baking; participants also take a freshly baked loaf of Zopf home with them. The tours take place on selected dates during the season. Check the dates before your visit if you would like to experience bread baking.
PostBus Connections
PostBus routes 61 and 62 connect Aeschi with Spiez every half hour. Route 62 continues to Aeschiried once an hour. As this information relates to the timetable, check current departure times before travelling. The Aeschi, Post bus stop is also a landmark for the village circular trail and the panoramic circular hike.
