Gsteig is in the Bernese Oberland, on the route to the Col du Pillon. The village does not have its own train station; buses connect it with Gstaad, the Col du Pillon and Les Diablerets. Check the timetable for the connection you plan to use on your travel dates. When looking for a hotel for a stay in Gsteig, your planned activities can help guide your choice: a moderately difficult cross-country ski trail, a hike, the Burg Falls and historic village features each offer a different focus.

Hiking, Gorge and Mountain Lake

The Chastalet circular trail passes through the landscape and history of Gsteig. This moderately difficult hike is 6.6 kilometres long and takes about two and a half hours. Information boards accompany the circular trail; a brochure is available from the tourist office. If you would like to use the brochure, ask about its availability in advance.

The Burg Falls are a gorge near Gsteig with waterfalls and steep slopes. The route to the Burg Falls from Gsteig via Innergsteig includes an ascent of around 150 metres. It is suitable only for experienced mountain hikers: the trail includes narrow bridges and stairs, as well as some steep and exposed sections. Check local trail conditions before your visit. This information helps distinguish the route from an ordinary hike.

The Sanetsch Lake near Gsteig can be circumnavigated in about an hour and a half. A quick dip in the cold mountain lake is possible; water and access conditions may vary. Other local excursion destinations include Lake Arnensee and the nature reserve on the Oldenhorn. These destinations offer further possible focuses for your stay, alongside the trails and the gorge.

Cross-Country Skiing and Getting Here

The Gsteig cross-country ski trail starts in the village. It is moderately difficult, 5.2 kilometres long and takes about an hour; snow conditions may vary. Compared with the Chastalet circular trail, which takes around two and a half hours, it is the shorter of the two routes described. This lets you take the approximate time for each activity into account when planning, without treating the different types of route as equivalent.

Parking for the ski trail is available at its entrance in Innergsteig or at Gsteig school. Parking regulations may change, so check them before setting off. If travelling without a train station in the village, you can consider bus connections to Gstaad, the Col du Pillon and Les Diablerets; the timetable on your travel day is the one to consult for your specific connection.

Village History and Church

Gsteig was first mentioned in official records in 1312 under the name Chastalet. Chastalet referred to a watchtower, defensive tower and refuge tower. The history of the name and the tower gives the Chastalet circular trail a historical connection, while the information boards along the route provide additional guidance.

Gsteig Church was dedicated to Saint Theodul in 1453 and became independent from the parish of Saanen after 1500. The building is plastered and has a steep, shingle-covered gable roof with dormer windows, as well as a three-storey chancel tower. The former packhorse trail to the Col du Pillon can still be seen beside the inn. Alpine farming has also shaped the village’s history: it has been practised there for centuries, and the history of the livestock market dates back to 1727.

Fondue Experience

The Fondue Caquelon Gsteig experience features eight oversized fondue pots and two specially equipped huts. Each hut can accommodate up to eight people. The experience also includes ingredients for an outdoor fondue or raclette. If you are planning to take part, ask in advance about the current arrangements and services, as details may change. The information about the huts and fondue pots also gives you a clear idea of the group size the experience is designed for.
