Schönried: Hiking, Winter Sports and Regional Culture
Accommodation in Schönried
Schönried combines themed trails and hikes with winter sports and regional culture. When planning your trip, you can compare the options by activity, season and published trail length. A look at the village’s history and landscape also reveals another side of the area.
Hiking Trails and Play Areas
T8 Saanis Bergerlebnis is a 4.6-kilometre themed trail with 17 stations. It ends in Schönried at the “Saani’s climbing playground.” The “Saani's climbing playground Schönried” includes, among other things, a climbing structure with a slide, a zip line, a trampoline, a net hammock, a seesaw and a log cabin. The playground is on the panorama trail to Saanenmöser.
The W14 Saanenmöser–Schönried–Gstaad panorama trail also passes through Schönried. The hike is 6.9 kilometres long and rated moderate. A considerably longer option is the difficult 16-kilometre W19 Schönried–Rellerli–Bire–Sparenmoos hike. The length and difficulty rating help distinguish these two hikes. For mountain biking, the B4 Rellerli Loop is listed at 15.5 kilometres; it is described as a mountain bike tour, not a hike.
Winter Sports and Summer Trails
In winter, Schönried’s local mountain has 105 kilometres of ski runs for skiers and snowboarders. In summer, these ski runs become trails for high-altitude and ridge hikes. Rellerli is accessible year-round to hikers, ski tourers and snowshoers. As conditions can vary by season, check them before setting out.
The Horneggli area has the Hornfluh climbing park and a ski safari. Another winter activity in Schönried is curling on a natural ice rink. An 18-kilometre cross-country ski trail also runs between Schönried and Saanenmöser. You can reach the Schönried–Rellerli ski tour by train to Schönried or by postbus to the Schönried, Schulhaus stop. Check the timetable before travelling.
Discover History and Landscape
The Ww12 Schönried–Saanenmöser history trail presents local history from the 13th to the 19th century on eleven information boards. This breaks the period covered along the trail into individual stops. On cross-country ski trail 174.3 Schönried, you pass traditional regional farms in the chalet style, whose original character can be admired. Here, the focus is on historical themes and traditional architecture, while the cross-country ski trail offers a winter activity.
Rellerli Mountain lies at an elevation of 1,833 metres above the chalet village of Schönried. Together with the summer high-altitude and ridge trails, it shapes the landscape around the activities in the area. When choosing a tour, you can also consider whether you are more interested in hiking, mountain biking, winter sports or regional history.
A Stop at Grossi Vorschess
Grossi Vorschess has a wooden fondue caquelon and a barbecue area that is open year-round. You can enjoy fondue you bring with you there. Check local conditions before setting out. The Schönried tourist office & post agency can provide information about the Gstaad holiday region’s offerings. It sells, among other things, ski and event tickets, cross-country ski passes and fishing licences. As services may change, check the latest information if you have a specific need.
