Isenfluh is a small village above the road from Wilderswil to Lauterbrunnen. If you are looking for hotels in Isenfluh, your travel dates and planned activities can provide a starting point for planning your stay. The village character, trails and seasonal descents offer different highlights.

Getting there and location

The PostBus takes a further 14 minutes to travel directly from Lauterbrunnen station square to Isenfluh. Check the timetable for your travel date; services and traffic can vary. If travelling from Interlaken or Wilderswil, follow the main road towards Lauterbrunnen. About two kilometres after Zweilütschinen, a sign points right towards Isenfluh. A winding mountain road then leads up to the village and the cable car’s valley station. Check traffic and access conditions before setting off.

Village character and history

Isenfluh is a small hamlet whose inner and outer character has remained intact. Its village centre has spatial qualities, with winding lanes, courtyards and open spaces; some of the Oberland houses are architecturally significant. These features give the village its own architectural character, which you can explore independently of the routes to Sulwald.

The village’s history can also be traced through two distinct periods: Isenfluh belonged to Interlaken Monastery from the 14th century. From 1528, the village was administered by the Interlaken bailiwick for 270 years. These details refer to an earlier period of ownership and a later period of administration.

Routes to Sulwald and Mäderalp

Since 1975, a cable car has connected Isenfluh with the hamlet of Sulwald. From Isenfluh, take the gondola up; the themed trail starts in Sulwald. It passes the Sulwald viewpoint and the Lobhornhütte before returning to Sulwald and Isenfluh. Along the trail, seven signposted stops share insights into nature and places steeped in legend. Local conditions may affect access.

Various mountain hiking trails lead to Mäderalp, either from the Isenfluh PostBus stop or from the Sulwald mountain station. These are two possible starting points for planning your hike; trail conditions can change. The Lobhornhütte is in the Isenfluh area, on a plateau at just under 2,000 metres, high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley and close to the small Sulssewli lake. It can be reached from Isenfluh in a few hours. The hut is known for its views of the nearby ice giants of the Bernese Alps and the rich variety of flora in its surroundings.

Descents and winter tours

A descent from Sulwald to Isenfluh is available on a monster scooter. The route follows winding alpine roads past meadows and forests. Monster scooters can be rented directly at the Isenfluh–Sulwald cable car’s mountain station, returned at the valley station in Isenfluh after the ride, and paid for there. The service is seasonal, and rental arrangements may change. If you plan this descent, check the options in advance.

In winter, the four-kilometre toboggan run descends from Sulwald to Isenfluh, passing the frozen Sulsbach waterfall. Snow and operating conditions can vary by season. Another option is a ski tour to Höji Sulegg, which leads from Sulwald via Sulsalp to the 2,413-metre summit. The descent can follow the toboggan run and Bockstett down to the Isenfluh stop. On this high-alpine route, access depends on snow and avalanche conditions. The toboggan run and ski tour therefore differ both in their starting points or routes and in the type of activity.

Dining in Sulwald

Sulwald Stübli serves regional and Tyrolean cuisine, as well as wine and local beer. As the offerings may change, check them if you plan to make a stop there. This will help you fit the routes, descents and a possible stop into your travel dates.
