Oberdiessbach: Castle History and Themed Trails
Accommodation in Oberdiessbach
Cultural history and nature trails can offer different highlights during your stay in Oberdiessbach. The New Castle, historic residential and commercial buildings, themed information trails and individual hikes provide specific points of interest. Before your trip, you can consider whether you would like to focus more on architectural history, local history or a route through the landscape.
Castle Architecture and Historic Houses
Oberdiessbach New Castle was built between 1666 and 1668 and is considered the first country estate designed purely in the French style. It is also considered the first castle in Switzerland deliberately integrated into the landscape as an open country estate. The complex is divided into three wings; a monumental staircase connects the north and south wings. Its period of construction, relationship to the landscape and architectural layout each offer a distinct historical and architectural point of reference.
The castle can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Tours are offered from mid-April to the end of October by prior arrangement. If you plan to visit, book in advance and check the available visit arrangements.
The Geissbühlerhaus was built around 1771; its original post-and-beam structure is largely intact. The BuumeHus is a stately neoclassical timber-frame building. From 1846 to 1993, it housed one of the village’s first general stores. Today, exhibitions about the history of the former village shop are held there, including displays on washing and cleaning, colonial goods and historical clothing. Each building highlights different aspects: the Geissbühlerhaus its preserved structure, and the BuumeHus the connection between its architectural form, former use and exhibition themes.
Local History on Themed Trails
The church in Oberdiessbach was rebuilt in 1498. The four Oberdiessbach information trails focus on general history, church history, economic history and nature. You can discover their stops on shorter or longer walks. The trails combine a range of themes with the option of choosing how far to walk.
On the local history trail, the Old Castle is a stop relating to the town’s history, while the Läderach House is one of its historic sites. It is described as the oldest residential house and dated to 1557. The ruins of Diessenberg Castle in Aeschlen are also part of the local history trail. If you are particularly interested in the area’s economic past, the economic history trail includes the Lower Castle Mill, a stop illustrating the use of hydropower.
Nature Destinations and Hikes
The nature trail takes in nature reserves along the Kiese between Freimettigen and Oberdiessbach, important amphibian habitats and a walk along the castle avenue. Another natural highlight is Spächteloch: in a side valley of the Diessbachgraben, water plunges freely more than ten metres at several points. The best way to see the waterfall is from below, via the Diessbachgraben. It can be visited at any time of year when conditions are dry and you are wearing sturdy footwear.
Gumistein offers a different geological point of interest. The erratic boulder is made of calcareous sandstone and lies on a hill of glacial origin that forms part of a moraine ridge. Along with Spächteloch, it offers a different focus from the historic houses and castle complexes: here, the emphasis is on rock, water and landscape.
The hikes can also be compared by their stated details. The route from Linden to Oberdiessbach is 11.4 kilometres long and takes 3 hours and 15 minutes. At Schafegg, it offers views across the Mittelland to the Jura heights, over the green hills of the Emmental and towards the rocky peaks of the Alps. The Chuderhüsi–Aebersold–Oberdiessbach hike is 11.1 kilometres long and rated easy. For this route, Oberdiessbach station is the designated return point. These details provide different starting points for planning your hikes: the Linden hike gives a stated duration and viewpoints, while the route via Chuderhüsi and Aebersold gives a difficulty rating and a named return point.
