Zäziwil lies in the western Emmental between the Blasenfluh and Kurzenberg areas in the Chisental. The Chisental is a transit valley between the Aare Valley and the Emmental. Different interests can guide your choice of stay: the annual Brächete, the distinctive village church, trails offering views of typical Emmental landscapes, or activities related to crafts, nature and animals.

Landscape and nature trails

The Chise and the Zäzibach have shaped the landscape and the people of Zäziwil over the centuries. This created fertile farmland and a recreational area. Trails around Zäziwil offer views of the ravines and ridges typical of the Emmental. The landscape can thus be experienced in different ways, from areas shaped by water to striking landforms.

The Bueleberg nature forest reserve is in the municipality of Zäziwil, north of Zäziwil in the eastern part of Bueleberg. It extends from 783 to 963 metres above sea level. Two official hiking trails border the reserve: an upper trail leads to Oberthal, and a lower one to Rünkhofen. The reserve aims to protect and promote endangered plant and animal species and their habitats. Check local access options before visiting.

Village church and Brächete

Zäziwil Church was built in 1963/64 by Bernese architect Werner Küenzi and is considered an exceptional landmark of the village. Its design features narrow, high-set window slits with stained glass, as well as a glass altar backdrop with a simple iron cross. These contrasting elements give the church a distinctive architectural character.

The Brächete was revived in Zäziwil in 1955 as an old custom by dedicated local people. It takes place every year on the last Wednesday in September. Visitors can watch the traditional stages of work, from the flax plant to linen fabric or rope. The demonstration follows time-honoured practices from the days of Gotthelf.

The market features more than 100 stalls selling regional specialities and traditional goods, including Emmental specialities. The market is scheduled to run from 9 am to 5:30 pm. The individual vendors and goods may vary from year to year, so it is worth checking the details for the date in question.

Castle hill, workshops and places to relax

The Zwingherrenhubel castle site lies south of Zäziwil. Features still visible include a castle hill with a steeply sloping main plateau, ditches on the south and west sides, and an outer rampart. From the last building, a marked hiking trail climbs steeply through the woods east of the road to the castle hill in about ten minutes. Suitable footwear may be helpful on the steep forest path. Another marked hiking trail starts at Zäziwil railway station, heads south via the Moosgraben and reaches the hill in about 30 minutes. Trail conditions may vary by season.

Rana Atelier offers sewing workshops for children, where they can make items such as phone pouches, toiletry bags and key rings. Another workshop format is for children aged two and up: they paint, knead and stamp using paints, various materials and tools. Adults can take themed workshops and sewing classes, with projects for groups, beginners and more experienced participants. Check current dates before planning.

Alpakaaktiv offers a relaxing family experience that brings visitors close to the alpacas and encourages them to connect with nature. Another activity offers insights into the work, the animals’ care and the farm’s philosophy, followed by a visit to the farm shop, which sells alpaca products. Booking in advance is recommended; confirm the booking arrangements directly.

For quieter breaks, there are spots by the water and the Waldmätteli picnic area with a fire pit. The Waldmätteli fire site on the edge of the forest has two fire pits, a small playground and a fountain; a small stream is nearby.

Getting there and planning your trip

Zäziwil is on the BLS Bern–Lucerne line and is served by the S2. Check the timetable for your specific travel date. The Brächete, held on the last Wednesday in September, provides a fixed annual date for planning; workshop dates and local access to the nature forest reserve should be checked in advance. If you are looking for a hotel in Zäziwil, these differences can help you plan your stay around the event, hiking trails or creative activities.
