Sutz-Lattrigen on Lake Biel
Accommodation in Sutz-Lattrigen
The municipality of Sutz-Lattrigen lies on the southern shore of Lake Biel. In Lattrigen, the defining themes range from the long, linear village and its historic buildings to Neolithic archaeology and time by the water. This gives you several concrete options to consider when deciding whether to spend your time exploring local history, enjoying activities on the lake or getting outdoors and being active.
The Village Landscape of Lattrigen
Lattrigen is a long, linear village above the shore of Lake Biel. The village area encompasses almost all of the settlement’s historic buildings; the village character of Sutz-Lattrigen is particularly well preserved here. The large tiled roofs define the streetscape and shape the village’s silhouette. If you are interested in architecture, you can view the buildings, roof shapes and streetscape as a cohesive village landscape. The municipality of Sutz-Lattrigen is also home to significant pile dwelling settlements and striking historic buildings. The former von Rütte estate includes a magnificent park and the “Pavillon chinois.”
Wine Trading and Brickmaking
The Ländtehaus stands right on the shore of Lake Biel and dates back to the 16th century. It was initially used to store wine temporarily from the Bernese vineyards at the southern foot of the Jura. Historically, the harbour of Lattrigen was also an important transhipment point for wine transported to Bern. The Ländtehaus estate was later converted into a brickworks; remains of two brick kilns were uncovered from this period. The history of the building thus spans its use for wine storage and its later use as a brickworks.
Pile Dwelling History and Culture
The Neolithic UNESCO World Heritage site of Sutz-Lattrigen, Rütte lies in the lakeshore area of Lake Biel, in front of the von Rütte estate. Since 2020, structural measures have protected the site from further erosion. A public wooden footbridge leads to the Archaeological Service’s diving base on a platform in the lake and offers a view of the site.
The von Rütte estate offers talks and guided tours for groups of five or more, arranged individually. Topics can include the estate’s history, archaeology, organic farming and architecture. As a group, agree on a date and the topics you would like to cover in advance, as talks and guided tours are arranged individually. The estate also hosts numerous cultural events every year. If you are travelling on a particular date, check the event dates in advance.

The farm at the von Rütte estate is managed according to organic principles and is set in a natural lakeside landscape with a variety of habitats for plants and animals.
