Guggisberg offers ways to combine a stay with village history and hikes. A village walk, the Vreneli Museum and trails to the Guggershörnli offer different points of interest. Which ones you include depends on whether you would rather get to know the village or spend time on hiking trails.

Village History and Culture

At the Vreneli Museum, you can learn about the story behind one of Switzerland’s most famous folk songs. Visits are possible by prior arrangement only; in the morning or afternoon, the museum offers a guided introduction to the story of Vreneli. Only the ground floor is accessible to wheelchair users; the first and second floors are not wheelchair accessible.

Guggisberg Church was built in its present form in the 15th century, with a massive late Gothic tower. The chancel houses one of the most important and beautiful late Gothic baptismal fonts in the Bern region. The church has been under federal protection since 1974. Its architecture, baptismal font and history of protection each offer a different perspective on the village.

The freely accessible village walk passes 17 information boards located throughout the village. They share interesting facts about the historic houses with their long traditions. The route is about 1 kilometre long and easily accessible to everyone. It is a way to explore the village’s history on a compact walk, without making a longer hike the main focus.

The exhibition space for Kunst in Guggisberg is located in the attic of the municipal building. Dates for individual exhibitions may vary, so check the current programme before visiting.

Hiking Trails and Views at the Guggershörnli

The Vreneli Trail connects Guggisberg with Walenhaus via the Guggershörnli, or with Riffenmatt via the Schwendelberg. Five specially designed rest stops offer views and games that put your wit and ingenuity to the test. The trail follows official hiking paths, is quite steep and requires suitable hiking equipment, including sturdy footwear. To return to Guggisberg, you can follow the marked hiking trail or take the PostBus.

The Guggershörnli is a distinctive, wooded mountain above the village, with a Nagelfluh rock formation on its summit. It is about a half-hour walk from Guggisberg and offers panoramic views. The steep rock face is climbed from the west via a sturdy wooden staircase. This lets you combine the hike with a view of the unusual rock formation, while the ascent itself is via the staircase.

The Guggershörnli picnic area is another possible stop along the way. It is at an elevation of 1,283 metres above sea level and can be reached via the hiking trail from Guggisberg, at 1,115 metres, or from Riffenmatt. The covered picnic area has a grill grate and around 16 seats. From there, views extend across large parts of Gantrisch Nature Park, from the Alps to Lake Biel.

More Activities and Getting There

For e-bike trips, the approximately 50-kilometre Gantrisch 333 Legends Route passes through the Vreneli village of Guggisberg and includes five legend stops. The route and details may change, so check them before setting out. Well-marked bike tours are also part of the activities on offer around Guggisberg. Along the Sense, swimming and barbecue spots are among the area’s amenities; local access conditions may vary.

PostBus route 612 connects Schwarzenburg with Guggisberg. If you plan to use this service, check the timetable for your travel date. This will help you decide whether a hike followed by a return along the marked trail or by PostBus better suits your outing.

Regional Specialties

Käserei Guggisberg AG produces Gruyère AOP and other cheese specialties. Its self-service shop offers regional products such as Brätzeli, Meinques, Krachmandeln, syrup, honey and jam; the selection may change. This adds an insight into regional produce to the nature and cultural experiences, but does not imply that tastings are available.
