Kirchdorf is a rural municipality in the Canton of Bern with several localities. Located on a terrace on the southern foothills of the Belpberg, it lies between the Aare Valley and GĂĽrbe Valley. The municipal area includes gentle hills, farmland, forests and Gerzensee, which is a protected nature reserve. Its historic village setting and rural landscape offer different starting points for planning your trip. When choosing Kirchdorf as a destination, you can focus on the village center, the church, the landscape or hiking trails, depending on your interests.

Historic Village Center and Settlement Patterns

The village center of Kirchdorf is considered a site of national importance. The historic village area consists of a clustered village section and a street village section adjoining it tangentially. The terms refer to two different settlement patterns: a clustered village and a street village section. In Kirchdorf, the two patterns meet rather than forming a single, uniform settlement. The old village boundaries have remained relatively undisturbed because more recent construction has largely been kept away from the village center worthy of protection. Thus, both the layout of the village area and the largely preserved character of its old boundaries are part of the village setting.

Church and History

Together with the rectory, benefice house and oven house, the rectory garden and the former cemetery, the church forms a historically significant precinct enclosed by its surroundings. Kirchdorf’s new church was built in the Neo-Gothic style to plans by Christen of Burgdorf, the town architect, and was inaugurated in 1874. A renovation in 1957/58 gave it its present, simple appearance. Its building history thus includes both the construction of the new church and a later renovation that shaped its current appearance.

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by a La Tène-period burial ground near Kirchdorf. Kirchdorf was first mentioned in 1228 as “Chiltdorf.” The Reformed parish also shapes the events calendar: in August, it invites visitors to the Linden Sermon. If you would like to include this event in your travel plans, check the current dates in the events calendar.

Gerzensee and the Landscape

Gerzensee, a protected nature reserve, lies north of Kirchdorf. Prominent belts of water lilies and reeds, along with trees lining the lake, characterize the area. The immediate lakeshore is privately owned by the Swiss National Bank’s Study Center in Gerzensee; bear these ownership arrangements in mind when finding your way around the lake.

During prolonged cold spells, Gerzensee may freeze over to form a natural ice rink, inviting visitors to skate and take extended walks. This possibility depends on the weather. Check the conditions locally before planning a specific outing. Kirchdorf also has two simply equipped bathing areas. They may be used only by residents of the neighboring municipalities of Kirchdorf and Gerzensee; check local conditions before swimming.

Hiking Trails and Getting There

Hiking trails lead to viewpoints such as “Lindli.” One named route is titled “The Drama in the Church of Kirchdorf”: it runs from the Gerzensee, Post stop, via the “new castle” and a scenic moraine ridge to Kirchdorf. The route thus connects a starting point at the stop with a path over the moraine ridge to the village. Check the signs again before setting out.

Kirchdorf can be reached by postbus from the Wichtrach or MĂĽnsingen railway stations in the Aare Valley, as well as from Kaufdorf in the GĂĽrbe Valley. As public transport connections and schedules can change, check the latest connections before your trip. This will help you plan your journey and decide which of the local attractions matter most to your stay.
