Niedermuhlern is situated on the Längenberg ridge west of the Gürbetal valley. The municipality combines a landscape shaped by glaciers with hiking trails, astronomy attractions and historic buildings. If you are looking for a hotel in Niedermuhlern, these different themes can help you plan your stay according to your interests.

Längenberg, Landscape and Trails

Part of the Längenberg ridge lies within the municipality. There, rounded forms smoothed by the Aare Glacier and moraine deposits in several places shape the landscape. Niedermuhlern is located in the Gantrisch Regional Nature Park. From here, you can enjoy views of Lake Thun and the Bernese Alps.

Hiking trails in Niedermuhlern follow paths along the Way of St. James. Another option is the Längenberg Farm Trail: it starts at the church in Zimmerwald, heads towards Niedermuhlern and then continues towards Obermuhlern as far as the hamlet of Underi Schür. The easy walk is well suited to pushchairs. This distinguishes two different types of route: Way of St. James paths in Niedermuhlern and a walking trail that starts in Zimmerwald.

The Gürbetal High Trail also passes through Fallenbach in Niedermuhlern. The Fallenbach fire pit is located along the trail at 800 metres above sea level. From there, the unobstructed view extends south across the Gürbetal valley, Lake Thun and the Alps. The elevation and the view give this spot a different landscape setting from the trails across the Längenberg ridge.

Space Eye and Uecht Solar Tower

Space Eye in Niedermuhlern is a public observatory and experience centre for astronomy and the environment in the Bern region. Its attractions include a modern 8K planetarium, an interactive exhibition and a space laboratory. The entire Space Eye is wheelchair accessible. Special events on astronomy, spaceflight and nature take place throughout the year.

You need a ticket or a reservation for a specific time slot in advance to visit. From the village, you can reach Space Eye on foot via the Space Eye Experience Trail or, at certain times, by Space Eye Shuttle. Check the available time slots and shuttle times before planning your visit. If you are particularly interested in the sun, the Uecht Solar Tower offers another attraction: guided tours and live demonstrations of solar activity are available on request for individuals and small groups of up to around eight people. It is about a 20-minute walk from the Niedermuhlern “Baumgärtli” postbus stop to the solar tower.

Historic Buildings in Niedermuhlern and Zimmerwald

Bachmühle Niedermuhlern was built in 1773 and is considered one of the most grandly appointed mill buildings in the canton of Bern. Notable architectural details include elaborate paintings on the timber framing and on the Ründi gable, as well as a magnificent, double-flight external staircase of sandstone blocks leading to the raised ground floor. The “Niedermuhlern, Bachmühle” public transport stop is located by the mill.

The Fallenbach farmhouse stands in the hamlet of Fallenbach and is a historic building dating from 1760. Elaborate woodwork and inscriptions on the doors and gates define the house. Together with its outbuildings and boxwood garden, it forms a complete farmstead on a moraine terrace of the Längenberg ridge. The combination of a group of buildings and its landscape setting distinguishes this site from the individual architectural features of Bachmühle.

The nearby Zimmerwald Church was built between 1697 and 1699. It is a simple, wide preaching hall with a continuous flat wooden ceiling. The church serves the political municipalities of Niedermuhlern and Wald, including Zimmerwald and Englisberg.

Practical Information for Trails and Activities

The Fallenbach fire pit has around twelve seats, firewood and a grill grate, but no covered seating. No advance registration is required. The fire pit can only be reached on foot or by bicycle; there is no parking there. The nearest public transport stop is about 1.5 kilometres away. This information helps you distinguish a visit to the fire pit from an outing where you want to drive directly to your destination.

Guided alpaca walks are offered year-round on the Längenberg at Steinegg Farm. Alpaca treks range from a short tour to a half-day walk. As this is a bookable activity, check availability before you arrive. The range of options in Niedermuhlern therefore extends from trails and viewpoints to astronomy, cultural monuments and guided encounters with animals.
