Uttigen is well suited to a stay that combines the Aare, outdoor paths and traces of local culture. The destination brings together a varied river landscape, cycling connections and a history that goes back to timber rafting. When planning, consider whether you would prefer to focus on walks by the water, a bike ride, boating on the Aare or the history of the town.

The Aare landscape and walking paths

The approximately two-kilometre stretch of the Aare known as “Oberi Au Uttigen” runs from the Uetendorf wastewater treatment plant bridge to the municipal boundary with Kiesen, above the SBB railway bridge. Wooded areas and diverse habitats with numerous plant and animal species line the river. The Aare landscape is also a local recreation area that invites visitors to hike and cycle.

Riverside paths running along the tops of the embankments are often used for walks. The river is therefore not only a landscape feature, but also a point of reference for exploring on foot. At Uttigenfluh, sandy and gravelly banks are part of the boating route on the Aare and are suitable for a break. Access to the river can vary depending on conditions. If you want to explore the river landscape, take the character of the riverbanks and conditions on the water into account when planning.

Cycling and boating on the river

The Lötschberg–Jura cycle route crosses the Aare at Uttigen. In this section, it briefly follows the right bank of the Aare along the main road before continuing through a rural setting. The cycle paths from Uttigen to Uetendorf and Heimberg are separate: they provide local connections, while the Lötschberg–Jura route is a section of a regional route.

The Aare boating route also has a notable point at Uttigen. The Uttigen weir is considered the route’s adrenaline highlight; a large boulder in the middle of the river creates powerful eddies there. To avoid the weir, take the train to Uttigen and walk five minutes to the launch site downstream of the weir. Check the current local safety guidance before setting out by boat.

History and local activities

Only small remnants of Uttigen’s former castle can still be seen today. The town’s location on the Aare also shaped its history: the river was important for timber rafting from an early date. Another historic landmark is the former schoolhouse. It was built on the remains of the medieval church, stands on Bühl Hill and has a roof turret with a clock.

Those interested in local club activities can find opportunities to take part in archery with the Uttigen Archers, both for club members and interested beginners. The club provides archery equipment in good condition for courses and events. Participation arrangements may change, so check them in advance. The cultural programme also includes an annual variety concert with theatre in November. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific event date.

Planning your journey and stay

For travel by train, the S1 suburban line between Bern and Thun is relevant: it runs in both directions through Uttigen every half hour. Check the timetable before travelling. Together with the cycle paths and the Aare landscape, this offers a range of ways to shape your stay—from a walk by the river to a bike ride or an event in the local cultural scene. Which of these appeals to you most can help guide your choice of hotel for your stay in Uttigen.
