Eriz: Cross-country skiing, moorland and hiking trails
Accommodation in Eriz
Eriz combines winter sports, moorland and hiking routes. The season is a good starting point for planning your trip: cross-country skiing and groomed winter paths depend on snow, while in summer you can discover insects and rare plants at Rotmoos. If you are looking for a hotel in Eriz, you can use this to choose when to travel.
Cross-country skiing and winter sports
The cross-country ski network at SnowPark Eriz includes 10 km of classic trails and 12 km of skating trails. Named routes include the 6 km Hohgant trail and the 8 km Zulg trail, which is suitable for both classic skiing and skating. The Eriz winter sports area includes ski lifts, a children's area, a small fun park, cross-country ski trails, winter hiking paths, sled runs and snowshoe trails. Operating hours may vary, so check the latest information before planning your day. Innereriz has two sled runs, each 300 m long; their use depends on snow conditions. The Swiss Ski and Snowboard School Eriz offers group and private ski and snowboard lessons. Check the current lesson arrangements in advance.
Winter routes by duration and activity
The groomed Zulg winter hiking trail runs from Innereriz Säge along the Zulg and the cross-country ski trail to Eriz Linden. The route is about 5 km long and takes approximately 1 hr 15 min. Grooming depends on snow conditions. The Rotmoos Trail offers a different time commitment: the snowshoe loop from Innereriz is 7 km long, involves 380 m of ascent and takes 3 hrs 15 min; route details may vary depending on snow and weather. For planning purposes, this gives you two different options: a groomed winter path and a longer snowshoe loop.
Moorland and nature watching
The Hängst sloping raised bog is the centrepiece of the nature reserve of the same name in the municipality of Eriz. It lies west of and above the Chaltenbach at 1,260 m above sea level. Numerous animal and plant species typical of moorland can be discovered in the Hängst nature reserve. Since 1996, Rotmoos has been included in the Inventory of Moorlands of Particular Beauty and National Importance. The Rotmoos Trail leads to Rotmoos; in summer, visitors can discover numerous insects and rare plants there, such as marsh cinquefoil and bog gentian.
Hikes and Koppisbrücke
Eriz has numerous hiking trails, from easy to challenging. Another hike starts at the Eriz, Losenegg stop and follows a narrow forest path downhill to the Zulg and Koppisbrücke. The covered wooden bridge connects Eriz and Horrenbach. There is a barbecue area at Koppisbrücke, making it a good place to stop during a hike; check its availability locally. Also check seasonal trail conditions locally.
Local character
Eriz’s history is tied to alpine farming, cattle pastures and summer alpine meadows. Restaurants in the Eriz Valley serve Swiss cuisine made with regional produce.
