Uebeschi is in the Bernese Oberland and has just over 700 residents. The rural municipality is characterised by views of the surrounding lakes and the Stockhorn range. The landscape, Uebeschisee and local activities offer different points of reference when choosing Uebeschi as a destination. These include hiking opportunities, trail rides and pony riding, as well as the moorland and the lake’s geological history.

Moraines, moorland and geological traces

Uebeschi lies in a glacially formed moraine landscape on long ridges between the Aare plain and the Stockhorn range. Small groves, stony drumlins, hedgerows and mighty oak trees shape the landscape. The broad ridges sit alongside smaller, distinctive features such as hedgerows and groves. The effects of glaciation are also evident at Uebeschisee: it formed during the last ice age as a so-called dead-ice lake.

In the Amsoldingen moorland landscape, the moors around Amsoldingersee and Uebeschisee lie between pronounced moraine ridges and smoothly rounded Molasse hills. Uebeschi is one of the municipalities in moorland landscape area 336, listed in the Federal Inventory of Mire Landscapes of Particular Beauty and of National Importance. This status places the municipality within a landscape shaped not only by its hills and lakes, but also by moors and a variety of geological formations.

Uebeschisee as a natural environment

Uebeschisee covers around 13 hectares and is about 15 metres deep at its deepest point. These two measurements describe different aspects of the lake: its area and its maximum depth. The lake is also a protected wetland. Its species-rich reed beds along the shore provide nesting grounds for waterbirds. Its history, dimensions and habitat make Uebeschisee a central nature-related feature of Uebeschi.

Another geological feature can be seen in Gisisalwäldli: compact, quartzitic sandstone is exposed there in a former quarry. This site adds a different geological example to the story of the dead-ice lake: exposed bedrock from a former quarry, rather than a lake formed during the last ice age.

Hiking, horse riding and local life

Uebeschi offers scenic hiking opportunities with views of the surrounding lakes and the Stockhorn range. These views give the hikes a distinct connection to the landscape. If you are choosing a destination primarily for its nature and scenery, the lakes and the Stockhorn range are useful landmarks for your stay. The municipality’s rural character and the views of the surrounding area complement each other as distinct aspects of its landscape.

At Stockhornhof in Uebeschi, professionally guided trail rides and pony riding are available for beginners with no experience as well as advanced riders. Trail rides last at least one hour. This includes preparing and caring for the horse before and after the ride. Bear these activities in mind when planning your time: the stated minimum duration covers more than the ride itself. The different activities are suited to the specified experience levels, making horse riding a concrete option alongside hiking.

A weekly Kafi takes place on Wednesdays outside school holidays in the Archestube at the multipurpose hall. Check the date before your visit. The Uebeschi cheese dairy offers another glimpse of local production: it makes regional dairy products from fresh milk produced without silage. Local farmers deliver the milk directly to the dairy twice a day. This means local life includes both a regular Kafi gathering and a clearly described form of regional production.
