Walterswil: Church, History and Hiking
Accommodation in Walterswil
Walterswil can be explored for trip-planning purposes through several specific themes: the church on a hillside terrace, the history of the municipality, and hikes in and around Walterswil. This lets you consider whether you would prefer to combine your stay with church architecture, local history or a walking tour.
Walterswil Church and Its Furnishings
Walterswil Church stands on a narrow hillside terrace above the village. It was built in 1744/45 under the direction of Samuel Lutz as a small, simple hall church. Its features include a three-sided chancel and a hexagonal roof turret. These architectural elements offer different points of reference when looking at the building: the chancel shapes the end of the hall, while the roof turret marks the roofline above.
The interior furnishings also bring together works from different periods. The stained-glass windows by Emil Gerster date from 1928 to 1930, while those by Paul Zehnder are from 1931. There is also a five-part Empire-style organ by Johann Jakob Weber from Juchten. The chronology of the stained-glass windows can be distinguished, as can the different forms of the furnishings: the window images and the organ each make their own contribution. Together with the simple building, they give a specific impression of the church without reducing its architecture to a single feature.
Local History and Local Names
Walterswil was first mentioned in a document in 1139. The history of the municipality also includes a territorial division: the border between the bailiwick of Trachselwald and the Landgraviate of Wangen ran through the middle of Walterswil. In 1889, Walterswil bought land in the Gassen area that extended from the municipality of Ursenbach between the two parts of the territory. This reunited the municipality.
The names “upper municipality” and “lower municipality” have remained in use to this day. Locally, the expression “Walterswiler-Röschtigraben” is also used for this division. The names refer to the traditional distinction within Walterswil and complement the history of its former division with a local expression still in use today.
Hiking and Winter Activities
Hikes in Walterswil (BE) and the surrounding area range from easy walks to more challenging tours. The “Wald & Weitsicht” route leads from the centre of Ursenbach to Walterswil and back. It is 9.1 kilometres long, with 226 metres of ascent and 226 metres of descent. The route “An stolzen Bauernsitzen vorüber durch den südlichen Oberaargau” is rated moderate, measures 14.4 kilometres and has a stated duration of 4 hours and 10 minutes.
The two routes can be distinguished using the planning details provided: for “Wald & Weitsicht,” the elevation gain and loss are listed along with the distance; for the moderate tour, a duration is also given. This allows you to take account of the route length and the details provided for planning, rather than comparing the tours by their titles alone.
In winter, the Walterswil ski lift is a possible activity. It is prepared and opened each year when snow and weather conditions permit.
