Montagny-près-Yverdon combines local history with an open landscape: the Reformed Church, the pentagonal tower of the Montagny-Le-Corbe castle complex and Roman finds give the village historical points of reference. From the village, views stretch across the plain and towards the Jura.

Church, Castle Remains and Roman Times

The present-day Reformed Church of Montagny-près-Yverdon was built in 1769. It has two very old bells. Visits are possible by contacting the pastor or the municipal administration in advance. So do not plan a visit on the assumption that you can enter without notice; arrange it beforehand with one of the contacts mentioned.

Only the pentagonal tower remains above ground of the Montagny-Le-Corbe castle complex. The Roman past is also linked to concrete traces: a former Roman road between Yverdon and Sainte-Croix passed through Montagny. A Roman milestone bearing the name of Emperor Caracalla was discovered in the municipality in 1862. Together, these examples illustrate different historical points of reference for the village: a surviving part of the castle complex, a former transport route and a find bearing an imperial inscription.

The Cup-Marked Stone in Bois des Planches

West of the village, in Bois des Planches, a small erratic boulder weighing more than a tonne can be seen beside a forest path. Two cup marks were probably carved into the stone during the Neolithic period. The term “cup-marked stone” refers to these carved depressions; their prehistoric dating is considered probable. If you plan to visit the boulder, check local access conditions beforehand.

Landscape and Regional Setting

The municipality is located northwest of Yverdon-les-Bains. The centre of Montagny-près-Yverdon is about three kilometres from Yverdon-les-Bains as the crow flies; this is not a road distance. Other geographical points refer to different parts of the municipality: Le Bey borders Lake Neuchâtel, and the highest point lies above the Brinaz at an elevation of 500 metres. From the village itself, views stretch across the plain and towards the Jura.

The Bonvillars wine-growing region also places Montagny in its regional context. It stretches from Montagny-près-Yverdon to Concise, passing through a succession of small villages. This is a broader landscape context than the individual historic sites in the village: the wine region describes a route through several villages, not just one place in Montagny.
