Rueyres-Les-Prés – Village Centre and Hiking
Accommodation in Rueyres-Les-Prés
Rueyres-les-Prés lies at an altitude of around 472 m in the north-western Fribourg Plateau, in the Fribourg exclave of Estavayer-le-Lac. Payerne is four and a half kilometres to the north-north-west. The village is located north of the Broye plain on a slope that gently descends to the south; the historic centre lies on both sides of the church. For your trip planning, the circular hiking trails and the old village ensemble offer two different focal points: a route with specific distance details and a village centre with distinctive buildings and works of art.
Hiking and Art Along the Way
Rueyres-les-Prés is a stop on the ArtiChoke circuit. It can be freely explored on foot or by bicycle year-round. A map showing the works, artists and various sights is available from the tourist office; check its availability before your visit. The circuit links the art stops with the journey itself, making it a different option from a loop with a stated distance and duration.
Bussy–Morens–Rueyres circular hiking trail No. 138 is 10 km long, takes about 2 hours 30 minutes and has an elevation gain of 130 metres. It reaches Rueyres-les-Prés at a large intersection and leads to the church as a stop along the route. After the church, it follows an agricultural track towards Pontet. The approximate duration and elevation gain help you gauge the scope of the hike. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
Village Centre and Architectural History
Rueyres-les-Prés is listed in the cantonal inventory as a settlement of local importance. The historic village centre includes farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries. The hillside setting and the layout on both sides of the church give the centre its distinctive spatial structure. Notable buildings include the Fruiterie, considered one of the oldest in the Broye district. The building is now used as a residence. The rectory features a late Gothic ensemble of three traceried windows, dated 1647.
A farmhouse in Rueyres-les-Prés was originally built as a rural dwelling in 1795. One farm has the type of masonry construction typical of the Broye region. At the farm dating from 1744, the southern forecourt is paved with river pebbles; a large lime tree marks the entrance to the village setting. The Roman past is located elsewhere: the enclosure wall of a Roman villa is found at Sur le Paquier.
Church Art and Restoration
The works of art in the churches also lend the village a distinct historical dimension. In the church of Rueyres-les-Prés, the mural “Agneau mystique” (Mystic Lamb), dating from 1936, is in the vault above the entrance to the choir. The altarpiece of the high altar in Saint-Loup Church is an oil painting by Emilio Maria Beretta from the same year; it depicts Saint Lupus. Saint-Loup Church’s organ gallery also features three oil-on-wood panels entitled “Anges musiciens” (Musician Angels), likewise from 1936. Together, these works show different forms: a mural, an altarpiece and a three-part work on the organ gallery.
The interior walls of the Catholic church in Rueyres-les-Prés were restored between mid-April and mid-July 2023. They were returned to the appearance given to them in 1934 by architect Fernand Dumas of the St-Luc group. Stratigraphic investigations helped identify and reproduce the original colours. The church thus brings together works of art from 1936 and a restoration that revisits an earlier interior design.
Landscape and Changing Municipal Boundaries
The former municipal territory included a section of the ridge between Lake Neuchâtel and the Broye plain, as well as a small section of the canalised course of the Petite Glâne. Rueyres-les-Prés was an independent municipality until 31 December 2016. On 1 January 2017, it merged with Bussy, Estavayer-le-Lac, Morens, Murist, Vernay and Vuissens to form the new municipality of Estavayer. These dates help distinguish historical names from the present-day municipal context, while the architecture and trails continue to shape the village’s local character.
