Vuissens: Village Structure, Heritage and Landscape
Accommodation in Vuissens
Vuissens combines a distinctive historic townscape with a landscape of high plateaus, forests and open spaces.
A village shaped by its layout
Vuissens is a street village on a high plateau between the valleys of the Mentue to the west and the Broye to the east, in the western Fribourg Central Plateau. Its linear village structure stands out: an exceptionally long row of farmhouses is aligned with the church. Vuissens is also listed in the Swiss Federal Inventory of Heritage Sites of National Importance.
The parish’s history also stretches back a long way: its earliest traces date back to the 12th century. The present-day Church of Saint Vincent was rebuilt in the village centre in 1805. The centre thus brings together a long ecclesiastical history and a clearly identifiable architectural focal point of the village.
Heritage and access to the Château
The Château de Vuissens is believed to have been founded around 1200 by the Fontana family. The oldest surviving part is the tower at the western corner. The Grange du château is listed in the inventory of cultural property for Vuissens as a Category B cultural asset. The restored Grange houses the A Votre Goût restaurant, which welcomes members and visitors. Check the restaurant’s operating status and opening hours before visiting.
A clear distinction is important when it comes to access to the Château: a description last updated in 2020 states that the castle courtyard is accessible at all times; the interiors are accessible only to restaurant guests and overnight guests. Check these conditions before your visit. This will help you plan your stay according to whether you want to see the exterior ensemble or visit the restaurant.
High plateau, forest and circular trail
The Vuissens plateau lies in the headwaters of the Petite Glâne. Other landscape features include forest areas at the source of the Flonzel and the wooded heights of the Grand Bois and the Bois de la Regne. The Les Marais-de-Courtes-Poses forest reserve is located within the territory of Vuissens. Land use also underscores the rural character: 51.1 percent of the area is agricultural land and 36.4 percent is wooded.
Circular route No. 74 Vuissens–Prévondavaux–Denezy–Vuissens leads from Vuissens first along a grassy path and then along an officially marked concrete path to Prévondavaux. A small public car park at the Château de Vuissens serves as the starting point for the circular route and is located at an altitude of around 740 metres. Plan the loop according to the time you have available and check the route information before setting off.
Golf and practice facilities
Golf Club Vuissens is open to visitors on weekdays and weekends; check visitor information before travelling. An independent golf academy at the club offers lessons for juniors and beginners. The golf course has 18 holes and is 6,150 metres long. Gentle terrain, along with a setting characterised by forests and lakes, defines the course.
The Golf Club has two putting greens, an approach-shot practice area, a covered driving range, practice mats and a grass practice area. The practice facilities described therefore serve different purposes: putting, approach shots and driving-range shots, as well as practice on mats and grass. This can help you weigh up the character of the course against the specific practice facilities available when planning your visit.
