Discover Franex: Trails, Chapel and Local History
Accommodation in Franex
Franex is a locality in the Broye district of the Canton of Fribourg. The Petite Glâne, hiking trails and the chapel provide concrete points of interest for a stay. The Boucle de Franex is a circular trail with a walking time of around two hours. A route to the Tour de la Molière leads from Franex to the Petite Glâne stream and follows it to Granges-de-Vesin. This provides both an approximate time estimate and a described route to help with planning.
Landscape along the Petite Glâne
Franex lies on the left-hand slope of the Petite Glâne valley, below the Tour de la Molière, in the molasse hill country between Lake Neuchâtel and the middle Broye Valley. This location places the village in the landscape between the lake region and the Broye Valley, while the stream serves as a local point of reference. The Ruisseau La Petite Glâne and its riverside woodland are associated with the former mill in Franex.
A road also connects Franex with Nuvilly via the mill. A bank borders one side of the road, while trees stand on the other. This describes the connection between the places both through its distinctive appearance and its association with the former mill. Agriculture in Franex focuses in particular on arable farming, dairy farming and livestock raising. These activities add insight into the character of the area alongside the stream, valley slope and mill.
Local History and the Chapel
Franex was first mentioned in 1242 under the name Frasnei. Later historical forms of the name were Frasnaj, Franey and Frane. Since the Middle Ages, Franex was under the lordship of Estavayer; the Cathedral Chapter of Lausanne also owned land in the village. Since 2017, Franex has been part of the municipality of Estavayer.
The small chapel in Franex is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and is documented as early as 1625. The chapel’s 18th-century altarpiece, which stood above the altar, was removed to make room for thirteen statuettes of Jesus and the Apostles. These details give the chapel a tangible connection to art and religious history. The Boucle de Franex also offers the opportunity to visit the chapel; check local trail conditions before setting out.
Hiking Trails and Art Route
The Boucle de Franex and the route to the Tour de la Molière offer different experiences: the Boucle is a circular trail with a walking time of around two hours, while the hiking route to the Tour de la Molière leads from Franex to the stream and follows it to Granges-de-Vesin. You can therefore choose between a circular trail with an approximate time estimate and a route along the Petite Glâne. Check trail conditions before hiking.
Franex is part of the ArtiChoke project, “13 Villages, 13 Faces.” The ArtiChoke urban art route is open year-round and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Check the route status, artworks and map before setting out. The Chemin des Blés information panel for Franex is at the edge of the village, in the direction of Payerne. As signage may change, follow the current trail markers along the way.
Plan Your Trip to Franex
If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Franex, you can plan around the activities available locally: the circular trail with a visit to the chapel, the route along the Petite Glâne or the art route. The Boucle’s approximate walking time can help you fit this activity into your day. First consider which of these activities you would like to focus on during your stay, then look for a hotel for your trip.
