Châtel-Sur-Montsalvens – Lake, Hiking Trails and Village History
Accommodation in Châtel-Sur-Montsalvens
Châtel-sur-Montsalvens is a municipality in the Gruyère district of the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland, at an altitude of 908 metres. Above the village are the Gorges de la Jogne, Lac de Montsalvens and the Montsalvens Dam. The original village consists of three historic hamlets built on terraces: Châtel-Dessous, Châtel-Dessus and Les Planets. When planning a trip, village history and architecture offer different points of interest alongside the landscape and hiking trails.
Historic Hamlets and Chapel
Châtel-Dessous comprises a chapel, a former chaplaincy and a row of houses. Next to the chapel is a notable residential building dating from 1795. Its façade is decorated with arcades and diamond motifs. The three hamlets and these buildings provide tangible links to the village’s history, from its historic settlement pattern to individual architectural details.
The chapel in Châtel-Dessous was consecrated in 1701. Its barrel vault is made of long wooden slats. Two tabernacles are arranged one above the other on the main altar, where images of Saints Nicolas and Magne can also be found. The nave contains a painting of Our Lady of the Rosary. A visit to the Sentier des patrimoines de la Jogne offers another way to explore this heritage: the trail passes through Châtel-sur-Montsalvens and brings the valley’s built heritage and living traditions to life. Nearly 60 information panels are located near buildings or places connected with these traditions.
Lake, Views and Dam
From Châtel-sur-Montsalvens, there are views of Vounetz, Dent-de-Broc, Moléson and Château de Gruyères. A striking feature of the landscape near Châtel-sur-Montsalvens is the Montsalvens Dam, considered Europe’s first arch dam with both horizontal and vertical curvature. The dam is 52 metres high and 110 metres long. At Lac de Montsalvens, a 60-metre-long suspension bridge also crosses an arm of the lake. These engineering structures and the lakeshore offer different attractions for outings and hikes.
Hikes and Current Trail Conditions
The Vias-du-Fromage route follows the shores of Lac de Montsalvens to the Châtel-sur-Montsalvens Dam, then continues through the Jaunbach Gorge towards Broc. As part of the hike through the Gorges de la Jogne, a three-kilometre forest trail runs between Broc and Châtel-sur-Montsalvens. The gorge hike features wooden bridges, tunnels and rock galleries, and is considered a little adventure for the whole family.
Important for planning: the Gorges de la Jogne are closed indefinitely following extensive winter damage; repair work is planned. Check the latest status before setting out on a hike. Despite the closure, the route from Crésuz to Gruyères via Châtel-sur-Montsalvens remains open.
A longer option by the lake is the circuit around Lac de Montsalvens, which is considered a three-hour hike. It follows the lakeshore, passes through the forest and over hills, and offers views of the Dents Vertes. The Châtel-sur-Montsalvens, Rest. stop is accessible by public transport for this hike. After hiking through the gorge, you can return from Châtel-sur-Montsalvens on bus route 260; check its current service before travelling. The different trail details help with planning: a distance is given for the forest trail between Broc and Châtel, while a time frame is given for the lake circuit. When looking for hotels in Châtel-sur-Montsalvens, you can plan your stay around your chosen interests, from village history to the lake and hiking landscape.
