Crésuz is located in the Gruyère region on a sunny terrace above Lac de Montsalvens. Village history, religious buildings and hiking trails shape the area. When planning your stay, the landscape, historic routes and range of hiking options offer a clear impression of what makes Crésuz distinctive.

Location and landscape around Crésuz

The municipality extends from 852 to 1,427 metres above sea level; the village centre lies at around 1,072 metres. Crésuz has a rural character and a compact settlement pattern. Meadows, alpine pastures and forests shape the landscape. Panoramic views of Lac de la Gruyère are also part of the experience when hiking around the area.

The village lies on a natural platform along the former route from Châtel-sur-Montsalvens. This led through the Javro gorge to Charmey or via Les Planches to Cerniat. These are historic route connections; the present-day hiking route along Crésuz is described separately.

Building history and village character

Crésuz was first mentioned in 1238 under the name “Crisue”. The fire of 1667 destroyed the village and its church; the Old Rectory was the only building in Crésuz to survive. The church was rebuilt in 1670. The Old Rectory is among the oldest dated houses in the canton of Fribourg and was built in 1547. From 1798 to 1917, it served as a school.

The church also tells the story of the area's architectural and cultural history. It features high-quality Baroque furnishings. Its organs were installed in 1919 and were made by Zurich organ builder Theodor Kuhn. The church also served as a model for the chapel in Châtel-sur-Montsalvens.

Oratoire Saint-Blaise

The Oratoire Saint-Blaise stands along the former route from Châtel-sur-Montsalvens to Crésuz. Today, it is a simple prayer oratory where Mass is no longer celebrated. Inside the oratory is an oak-wood triptych depicting the Virgin and Child, flanked by Saint Blaise and Sainte Geneviève. The work was created by Carlo Grisoni and donated by Claude Glasson in 1945. Together with the information about the church, this site reveals a distinct, religiously shaped part of Crésuz's history.

Hiking trails and historic routes

The Sentier des patrimoines de la Jogne is 22 kilometres long and follows already-marked hiking trails. The route is suitable for experienced hikers as well as families. Starting from Jaun, Charmey or Broc-Fabrique, it can be divided into stages of three hours of actual walking time each. Along the way, 45 panels explain significant elements of architectural heritage; twelve living traditions are also presented at distinctive locations. The trail combines physical activity with insights into architectural heritage and regional traditions.

Distinct from this is the Crésuz–Gruyères stage of the Vias du Fromage. It begins in the village centre and follows a route to Châtel-sur-Montsalvens that is listed in the Swiss Inventory of Historic Roads. The two routes therefore offer different points of interest: the Sentier des patrimoines focuses on its panels and the traditions presented, while the Vias du Fromage stage follows a historic route listed in the inventory.

Getting around and getting there

There is a playground next to the church in the village centre. It is a ten-minute walk from the Crésuz, Village bus stop. The playground includes a boules court; a wildlife park with deer is also nearby. As details about facilities and access may change, it is best to check them before your visit.

PostBus routes connect Crésuz with the surrounding municipalities. The nearest railway station is in Broc-Fabrique, with trains from there to Bulle and Fribourg. The Broc–Charmey section of the Sentier des patrimoines de la Jogne is also accessible by public transport. The nearest stops for this section are Broc, Chocolaterie, and Charmey, télécabine.
