Andeer: Mineral Baths, Village History and Nature Trails
Accommodation in Andeer
Andeer is in the Viamala region of the Canton of GraubĂĽnden and is the largest municipality in the Schams. The well-kept village centre, the healing spring with its mineral baths, and CasaStorica on the historic transit route define the place. For your trip planning, Andeer offers a special combination of bathing, village history and trails through the surrounding area.
Mineral Baths and Relaxation
The Andeer mineral baths have indoor and outdoor pools with bubble loungers, a neck shower and a whirlpool. The sauna area includes a bio sauna, Finnish sauna and steam room. Massages and physiotherapy treatments are available in the therapy department. If the baths are an important part of your stay, check current operating details and treatment availability before travelling.
In the 20th century, hiking and bathing tourism were among the sources of income in Andeer. The spa was rebuilt in 1982. This historical development adds context to the place today, without equating its significance at the time with a statement about current offerings.
Village History and Regional Culture
CasaStorica is both a museum and a venue, housed in a former residence in the village centre. Its exhibition explores the history of the valleys along the Hinterrhein and the historic ViaSpluga transit route. Items on display include documents from muleteers, postcards, publications, antiques and regional curiosities from the Viamala region. CasaStorica thus connects local history with the history of transport through the valleys.
Guided village tours and village theatre events also take place regularly in Andeer. You can check the dates before your trip. The Andeer dairy offers another insight into regional work: it processes 400,000 litres of silage-free organic milk. Five farming families and five people in processing produce milk, butter, yoghurt, quark and cheese there.
Trails Between Forest, Village and Gorge
The “Zwergenwald” children’s adventure trail is about 1.5 kilometres long and suitable for children aged four to eight. At 13 forest stations, visitors can find hidden animals and try music-making, balancing and talking on the telephone. The stations make the trail a practical option if you are planning a short outing with activities for this age group.
The forest nature trail runs between Andeer and Clugin and starts in Andeer at the covered wooden bridge. Along the trail, you can discover 11 conifer species, 26 deciduous tree species and 20 shrubs; there are also various nesting aids for birds. The Zwergenwald focuses on activity stations, while the forest nature trail highlights tree and shrub species as well as nesting aids.
In the Roffla Gorge, a rock gallery leads to the waterfall and allows you to pass beneath the roaring Rhine. At the entrance is a historic inn with a restaurant and a small museum about how the gorge was formed. The “Andeer, Rofflaschlucht” stop is served by PostBus; check the timetable when planning your trip.
The Schams Valley Loop is a cycling circuit through Val Schons via Zillis or Andeer, as well as Donat, Clugin, Pignia and Reischen. At Andeer’s southern edge, the route crosses the Hinterrhein. This provides two different perspectives on the region: the gorge and its waterfall, and a route through several villages in the valley.
Getting There and Transit History
Andeer is accessible by PostBus. For travel by car, the village is on the A13: from the north, take exit 24-Zillis towards Zillis/Andeer; from the south, take exit 25-Andeer. Timetables and road conditions may change, so factor them into your plans before setting off.
Transport has a long history in Andeer. After the road was built between 1818 and 1823, the village experienced an economic boom driven by traffic. The opening of the Gotthard Railway in 1882 later coincided with the loss of transit traffic. This sequence explains part of the village’s historical character and CasaStorica’s connection to ViaSpluga.
