Fardün is a village settlement in the municipality of Muntogna da Schons, in the Viamala region of the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Farden lies at an altitude of about 1,164 metres on the lower Schamserberg. Hiking trails, churches, a chapel and historic transport routes give the village several distinct points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Fardün, you can plan your stay around whether you are particularly interested in a legend associated with a trail, circular routes, or the area’s architecture and history.

Hiking: Legend, Stations and Circular Routes

The TrailCaldar is a puzzle trail with twelve stations based on the legend of Gion Caldar. It leads through forests and meadows and continues to Fardün. This connects a specific sequence of landscapes with a local legend. If you enjoy following a story while hiking, this connection offers a clear point of reference: the twelve stations focus on the story of Gion Caldar.

The Libi circular route passes through Fardün, which is also part of the Schamserberg Church Circular Route. Alongside the TrailCaldar, there are therefore different types of routes to choose from: a puzzle trail linked to a legend, a route explicitly described as a circular tour, and a church circular route. Comparing them can help you decide what matters most to you without treating the routes as interchangeable. Consider the character of each one: the TrailCaldar is defined by its legend and stations, the Libi by its circular route, and the Schamserberg route by its links to churches.

Chapel, Church and Historic Transport Routes

The Chapel of St. Nicholas in Fardün was founded in 1407. Its star vaults were built by the master craftsman Georg Murer of Chur in 1517. The dates refer to different aspects: 1407 to the chapel’s foundation, and 1517 to the star vaults. The term describes a vault with a star-shaped design, providing a specific architectural detail to consider when learning about the chapel.

The Reformed Church of Fardün is another historic point of interest. In its 2020 management plan, Beverin Nature Park lists it as a cultural asset of regional significance, based on an inventory. Those interested in local history can consider the church alongside the Chapel of St. Nicholas: the two buildings represent different historical points of interest in the village.

The historic castle site of La Tur is also part of the area’s history. It may have been the seat of the Lords of Patzen. Another trace of the past is the «Donat–Patzen–Fardün» transport route: the 2020 Inventory of Historic Transport Routes in Switzerland lists it as an object of local significance and describes much of its historic substance as well preserved. Conditions on site may change. The religious buildings and the historic route can thus be understood as distinct themes in the area’s history.

When choosing a hotel, it may help to decide first what you are most interested in: would you like to focus on the TrailCaldar and its legend, plan a circular route, or explore the historic buildings and routes? Livestock farming is the main activity in Farden and is another aspect of the village’s character, alongside its hiking trails and history. This overview connects the village’s specific attractions with planning your stay, without combining different routes or historic buildings into a single focus for an outing.
