Präz is a district of the municipality of Cazis in the canton of Graubünden. The village is at 1,182 m above sea level; the elevation range extends from 796 to 2,119 m above sea level. Several different themes may be of interest during a stay: the history of the church and Heinzenberg Castle, the Tilla Adventure Trail, a fallow deer visit, and a panoramic trail across the Heinzenbergergrat.

Präz Church: Year of Construction and Baptismal Font

Präz Church was built in 1488. It is dedicated to Saint Mary on 8 September and Saint George on 23 April. One special detail is the baptismal font: its base is twisted to the left, and the bowl transitions from a circle to an octagon. Eight empty coats of arms adorn the bowl. Alongside its architectural history, the church thus offers a concrete example of the design of an individual object.

Heinzenberg Castle Ruins

Heinzenberg Castle Ruins lie on a rocky hill below Präz and are the remains of a once extensive castle complex. They are open to the public; check the current access conditions before visiting. The castle was probably founded around 1200 by the Barons of Vaz; its tower dates from approximately the same period. The castle was the seat of the Vazers, who held territorial lordship, and later of the Werdenbergs and the Rhäzüns. This chronology links the probable founding period with the complex’s later role as a seat of power. From Präz, you can reach the fire pit by the ruins in about 20 minutes on foot.

Experiences Around Tilla

The Tilla Adventure Trail in Präz has eight stations with stories about Tilla and activities such as a hopping course, a cable ride and a suspension bridge. It takes about 1 to 2 hours. The combination of stories and activities sets the trail apart from the historical highlights at the church and castle ruins.

A 2026 program description lists “Fun and Games at Tilla's” as a weekly activity. It includes storytelling, treasure hunts, craft activities and nature-based activities. The program is for children aged five and up and is planned for all weather. Check the dates for your travel day.

Fallow Deer and Planning Your Time

The bookable-online fallow deer visit takes you to observe a herd above Präz. The herd lives at 1,500 m above sea level; allow about 1 to 1.5 hours for the visit. It takes place outdoors in all weather. Availability depends on the provider’s booking calendar, which you should check for your preferred date.

The time ranges for the Tilla Adventure Trail and the fallow deer visit overlap: the trail takes about 1 to 2 hours, while the visit takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. You can therefore distinguish between the activities more by their content than by their approximate duration: one focuses on stories and activity stations, the other on observing a fallow deer herd outdoors.

Heinzenbergergrat Trail and Getting There

The Heinzenbergergrat Trail follows a narrow panoramic path across the Heinzenbergergrat to Präzer Höhi, then descends via Präzer Alp to Präz. Conditions at higher elevations can vary; check the situation before setting out. Präz can be reached from Thusis by PostBus. Check the current timetable before travelling.
