Laret – Village Centre, Themed Trail and Hiking Routes
Accommodation in Laret
Samnaun-Laret combines an old village centre with a themed trail, a dairy and a range of hiking options. If you are looking for a hotel in Laret, the main focus of your trip can help shape your choice of destination: the Pater Maurus Carnot Trail centres on local history, while other routes follow the Schergenbach stream or lead to viewpoints. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are also available.
Local History and Finding Your Way Around the Village
The Pater Maurus Carnot themed trail starts at the “Samnaun-Laret, Dorf” stop, next to the birthplace of Father Maurus Carnot. A total of 17 information panels tell the story of the life of this notable Samnaun native. The trail thus connects a specific starting point in the village with the story of someone born in Laret. The Samnaun-Laret stop is served hourly by PostBus from Scuol-Tarasp or Martina, Cunfin.
Samnaun-Laret has narrow lanes and traditional farmhouses in the village centre. The valley hiking trail on the south-facing slope passes through the old village centre and continues through the Pra da Tea larch forest and over the pastures of Muttauna to Salatsch. Along this route, sections through the village alternate with named areas of countryside.
Hikes with Different Profiles
The Quellentrail Tal is described as an easy hike of about 3.6 kilometres, taking around 55 minutes. It follows the Schergenbach stream, passes the sports ground and goes through Samnaun-Ravaisch and Plan to the Laret-Abzweigung bus stop. The suggested journey is by the Rhaetian Railway to Scuol-Tarasp, then by PostBus to Samnaun Dorf and, during the day, by Samnaun bus. Check the current timetables before travelling.
On the Samnaun-Laret–Mot Grond route, the ascent leads through lush meadows and dense forests with diverse flora and fauna; along the way, there are views of Spiss in Austria. The barbecue area on Mot Grond is a separate destination: you can reach it from the “Samnaun-Laret, Abzweigung der Talstrasse” bus stop via a walk of around two kilometres.
The Samnaun-Laret–Fuorcla Curschiglias hike starts in Samnaun-Laret at an altitude of 1,700 metres. It climbs steadily to a viewpoint with panoramic views across the Samnaun Valley. Alongside paths through the village centre and beside the stream, there are also routes with viewpoints and stated elevations to choose from.
Summer and Winter Activities
In summer, Samnaun-Laret is the starting point for popular hikes to Alp Bella at an altitude of 2,380 metres. In winter, a snowshoe hike through the deep-snow landscape of Samnaun-Laret is recommended.
The Samnaun-Plan (L2) cross-country skiing loop is about 1.7 kilometres long and runs along both sides of the Schergenbach stream without any major climbs. The trail starts at the bridge over the stream on Talstrasse in Samnaun-Laret. Free parking for the trail is available in Samnaun-Laret or at the Alpinetta petrol station. As operations and parking arrangements depend on conditions or may change, check the snow conditions and parking situation before setting off.
A Look Inside the Dairy
At the Samnaun show dairy, or dairy, in Laret, visitors can see how local dairy products are made from Samnaun mountain milk. A guided tour offers an insight into the production process, followed by a tasting. Tours and cheese tastings can be arranged by prior booking. The dairy also offers a cheese platter as another way to discover its own specialities.
