Samedan: Engadine Houses, Churches and Culture
Accommodation in Samedan
Samedan is a village and political municipality in the canton of GraubĂĽnden, in the Upper Engadine and the Maloja Region. The historic centre, cultural offerings and outdoor trails give a stay different points of focus. When planning, consider whether you would like to focus mainly on architecture, a guided tour, exercise or a seasonal offering.
Engadine architecture and local history
In the historic village centre – including Crappun, Crasta and Surtuor – you will find well-preserved Engadine houses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Bay windows and elaborate sgraffiti define their appearance. Income from transit traffic, agriculture and mining contributed to a degree of prosperity in Samedan; various patrician houses and imposing Engadine houses were built as a result in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The building history thus connects specific architectural features with the economic foundations of earlier centuries.
The restored watchtower La Tuor stands in Surtuor and was first mentioned in a document in 1281. It was the seat of the Lords of Samedan and later served, among other things, as the seat of the Sur Funtauna Merla court and as a district prison. Literary history is also part of the village’s character: the old Engadine houses are associated with the reformer and Bible translator Giachem Bifrun and the Jenatsch family. In 1560, Bifrun published the «Nouv Testamaint», the first printed work of Ladin literature.
Churches, tours and art
The tower of the Evangelical Village Church is considered a landmark of Samedan; the church building is regarded as one of the most beautiful in the canton of GraubĂĽnden. The late Gothic church of San Peter is used for weddings and cultural events, as well as for Reformed church services during the summer season. Funeral services are now held there only rarely. The differing details about how the churches are used show that visits and event plans may require separate scheduling.
Those wishing to explore the historic village centre in context can take a professionally guided tour once a week. Highlights include sgraffiti on Engadine houses, patrician houses, churches and fountains. The Samedan architecture trail offers insights into architecture past and present along a 2.59-kilometre route. The riss art space adds a contemporary perspective, with changing exhibitions.
The historic village centre is also home to a vertical mineral bath that extends across three floors up to the attic. The outdoor pool is directly below the church tower and offers views of the Engadine mountains. If you plan to visit the baths, check the latest operating information. Tour arrangements and exhibition programmes may also change.
Trails for different interests
The Inn–Flaz–Flaz Vegl–Inn Water Trail is an 8.8-kilometre circular route suitable for pushchairs. It takes about 2.5 hours; digital information is available at benches and bridges. La Senda has a different focus: this 6.5-kilometre biodiversity trail features 32 learning stations and an elevation gain of 227 metres. For the Water Trail, its suitability for pushchairs and approximate duration are important factors, while La Senda highlights biodiversity and learning stations. Route details and stations may change following infrastructure updates.
In winter, grooming schedules also differ. The Winter Trail from Samedan to Alp Muntatsch is groomed once a week from November to March and offers a nature experience with panoramic views of the Samedan landscape; grooming depends on conditions and may change. The Cross-Country Skills Park in the Golfseeli area has 16 stations for improving fitness and technical skills in a fun way. It is groomed daily from mid-December to March. Check the latest information on the season and grooming when making specific plans.
Sports, markets and travel planning
The Promulins Arena in the centre offers indoor and outdoor sports, such as bouldering, curling, football, beach volleyball and a skatepark. Facilities include an artificial ice rink, a multipurpose hall and a fitness room; the offering may change. Golf enthusiasts can also look to the Samedan golf course of the Engadin Golf Club: the 18-hole championship course has a par of 72 and is considered Switzerland’s oldest golf course.
The weekly market on Chesa Planta Square offers regional products. It takes place every Tuesday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. from June to September. As seasonal market hours may change, it is worth checking them before your visit. The railway station is also relevant when planning your journey: Samedan has one of the most important junction stations of the Rhaetian Railway in the canton of GraubĂĽnden. In the Middle Ages, mule trains travelling on pass routes from south to north and east to west crossed paths here. For specific connections, consult the current timetable, as services and schedules may change.
