Molinis combines a natural landmark with several hiking options and a layered village history. The earth pyramids, the cultural hike between Tschiertschen and Molinis, and the church dedicated to Saint Bartholomew represent different aspects of the place. For planning, the most relevant factors are the trail surface, gradient and seasonal accessibility of individual routes.

Landscape and Earth Pyramids

Near Molinis, by the Plessur, unspoilt nature and imposing mountains shape the landscape. The Molinis earth pyramids are a natural landmark in the Arosa Lenzerheide area. Their appearance is constantly changing: older earth pyramids collapse while new ones form. Erosion drives this change. From Tschiertschen, at Usser Zana, leave the road 50 m to the right and follow the old path downhill past several old stables towards Molinis and the earth pyramids. Trail conditions may vary, so check local conditions before setting out.

Hiking Trails with Different Characteristics

The cultural hike between Tschiertschen and Molinis alternates between meadow and forest paths and can be started in Molinis. Check current trail conditions locally. On the Tschiertschen–Uf Wald–Earth Pyramids–Molinis route, you climb to the St. Peter/Molinis Rhaetian Railway station, which is at 1157 m above sea level. On the Hochwang–Peisteralp route, a steep ascent begins in Molinis and leads via Pagig and Triemal to the Hochwang ski lodge; ascent conditions may vary. The route descriptions highlight different features: the transition between meadow and forest, the climb to the station, or the steep ascent towards the ski lodge.

The partly alpine Via Son Giachen pilgrimage route is passable throughout only in the warmer seasons. Weather and trail conditions affect accessibility. When planning this route, therefore, take both the season and local conditions into account.

Church, Wooden Houses and Sound Installation

The church in Molinis is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew and was built between 1440 and 1509. A debris flow destroyed the building in the summer of 1980; it was rebuilt in 1982. Largely preserved, weathered wooden houses add to the village’s historic character.

The “'Dräscht” sound installation is located in Molinis. Visitors can thresh grain there with flails in a rhythmic beat. The installation was conceived by Carla Gabrí and created by Hans Scherrer. Its status may change after 2026; check before visiting.

Train Station and Practical Information

The St. Peter-Molinis station on the Arosa Railway was built in 1914. You can buy tickets there at Rhaetian Railway ticket machines. As station services may change, check the current ticket service before travelling. The station is also the endpoint of the ascent on the route via Uf Wald and the earth pyramids. This gives you both a clearly named route point and the practical option of buying tickets at the station when planning your trip.
