Saas in Prättigau is on the northern side of the central Prättigau valley, at the edge of the Klosters/Davos tourism region and about ten kilometres northwest of Klosters. Saas ranges in altitude from approximately 830 to 2,823 metres above sea level. Two distinct points of interest can help you choose your destination: the architectural history of the village centre and activities whose conditions vary with the seasons. If you are looking for a hotel in Saas, you can consider in advance whether local history, summer trails or a descent when there is enough snow matters most to you.

Walser wooden houses and Graubünden architectural style

The village centre consists of wooden houses typical of the Walser people, which were rebuilt after a village fire in 1735. Many houses in the village centre still show the original Graubünden architectural style, with white masonry bases and dark-brown wooden walls. The wooden houses and their material and colour details together shape the historic character of the place. For travellers interested in culture, this is a clear distinction between viewing the village centre as a whole and focusing on a single building such as the church.

Church with a distinctive spire

The present-day church in Saas was built around 1500. Its campanile spire is probably unique on the northern side of the Alps in Graubünden. Charred remains of the former beam floors can still be found in the church tower. The church thus adds an approximate date for a single church building, as well as distinctive details of its tower and materials, to the architectural history of the village centre. Taken together, the houses and the church highlight different aspects: the village centre and its reconstruction after the fire, and the features of a single building.

Summer trails and current trail conditions

In summer, the extensive, well-maintained network of biking and hiking trails runs from the valley floor up to Saaseralp and Madrisa. Cycling and hiking share this seasonal setting, and trail conditions can change. Before setting out on a specific tour, check the current conditions and plan according to the trail you actually intend to use. The size of the network is a distinct consideration when choosing between summer activities and a snow-dependent descent.

Toboggan run and family scooters

When there is enough snow, a 7.7-kilometre toboggan run leads from Madrisa down to Saas. The return journey is by bus from Saas village square. Planning therefore depends both on snow conditions, which are required for the descent, and on the bus connection for the return journey. Check both before setting out so that you can plan the descent and return trip together.

A descent on family scooters also leads from Madrisa to Saas. The scooters can be rented at the Madrisa cable car mountain station and returned at the signposted municipal centre in Saas. Rental and return arrangements may change, so check them before setting out. Compared with the toboggan run, the scooter ride centres on the rental and return locations, while snow conditions and the bus return journey are key planning considerations for tobogganing.
