Segnas offers several specific reasons to visit: the Chapel of St. Sebastian and Rochus, hiking trails, a seasonal skating trail and a mountain bike route. If you are looking for a hotel, you can choose your destination based on the excursions that interest you: architecture and history, a walking route, cycling or cross-country skiing. The activities also differ in practical terms: snow conditions and the timetable are relevant for the trail, while some hiking routes have their own waypoints and signs.

Chapel and local history

The Chapel of St. Sebastian and Rochus in Segnas faces west. It has a barrel vault and a choir with a polygonal end. The high altar is dated 1678 and consists of a simple wooden structure. The oldest painting in the church is at the right-hand side altar and was painted by Hans Greutter.

The dedication to the plague saints Rochus and Sebastian is linked to an event around 1638: 30 people died of the plague in Segnas at that time; the church was subsequently dedicated to the two saints. The chapel can be reached by train from Lucerne via the Oberalp Pass or from Zurich via Chur to Segnas. From there, it is a ten-minute walk.

A local connection to food culture is the Sialm meat-drying business in Segnas, founded in 1955. Local businesses, along with architecture and history, add to the picture of the destination.

Hiking and exploring the trails

The Muntatsch-Segnas Trail follows side roads, residential paths and groomed winter hiking trails. Its route through Segnas, Acletta, Muntatsch and Clavaniev is signposted throughout. The trail also passes through Cuoz and Buretsch on its way back to Segnas, passing the Chapel of Sogn Giachen. One specific destination is the Muntatsch viewpoint, where a bench offers a view of the Medelser Glacier.

The Planet Trail offers a different focus. It runs from Acletta to Segnas and is marked with brown signposts. Information panels are intended to help visitors better understand the dimensions of the cosmos. At the western end of Segnas, you will come across the popular hiking trail to Sedrun. If route conditions change, check the trail markers on site.

The circular route “With stroller, village round Disentis” passes through the hamlets of Acletta and Segnas. In the center of Segnas, it passes well-preserved Walser houses, manicured gardens and arcades. This brings the village’s appearance into focus, while the Planet Trail’s information panels explore a topic beyond village architecture.

Circular routes and cycling

For a mountain bike ride, the “MTB Family: Tschamut–Disentis” route descends through Mompé Tujetsch and Segnas to Disentis. Its direction of travel towards Disentis sets it apart from the circular routes that return to Segnas.

The “Segnas – Prau Sura” circular route starts at the upper end of the village. After descending through a forest from Mompé Tujetsch, it returns to Segnas. In winter, conditions can affect its accessibility. On the high trail from Segnas to Sedrun, you can return to Segnas by train from Sedrun; check the timetable for your travel day.

Cross-country skiing and getting there

The Segnas trail comprises five kilometres of skating trails divided into three sections. It is seasonal and depends on snow conditions. A Matterhorn Gotthard Railway stop is nearby. You can reach Segnas station by train from Andermatt via Sedrun or from Chur via Disentis. Check the timetable for your travel date and take snow conditions into account when planning.

The valley hike “Oberalp Pass – Sedrun – Disentis” also has a train connection at the Oberalp Pass: the train journey is via Andermatt from Lucerne, and via Chur and Disentis from Zurich. Together with the train access to the cross-country ski trail and the route to the chapel described above, this provides different travel options for each activity. Your choice therefore depends not only on the type of trail, but also on the starting point, season and return journey.
