Around Tujetsch, green meadows and rugged peaks define the Alpine scenery. The municipality is located in the Cadi region on the Vorderrhein, stretching from the Oberalp Pass to beyond Bugnei, and forms the westernmost part of the canton of Graubünden. Val Tavetsch is a valley in the canton of Graubünden, at an elevation of 1,485 metres. A striking natural attraction in the municipality of Tujetsch is Lake Toma, the source of the Rhine. Twelve mountain streams feed the lake, which lies in a basin surrounded by peaks over 2,000 metres high.

Scenery and trails

When planning your visit, bear in mind that Lake Toma can only be reached on foot. The hike from the Oberalp Pass takes about two hours each way. Access in the mountains depends on the season; check conditions before your trip. This means you can plan the excursion differently from a shorter route with a specified duration.

The NEAT Adventure Trail is 6.3 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. At twelve informative stations, you can learn more about the construction and operation of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. You can join the trail at any station; it is suitable for families, groups and school trips. The «Chapels and Churches in Tujetsch» route offers a different time commitment: it is 16.7 kilometres long and takes about five hours. Its theme is religious sites and buildings; some of them may have their own access rules. The two routes therefore differ both in content and in the time required.

Hiking routes around Tujetsch range from easy walks to challenging mountain climbs. You can also get a clear idea of a cycling tour from its described route: the Oberalp Bike route descends from Sedrun to the Rhine, follows the river through Selva and then climbs to Tschamut. This gives you different ways to get around and varied routes, without treating the trails as interchangeable.

Museums, churches and history

The La Truaisch Museum showcases life and work in Val Tujetsch in the past. In the minerals and crystals section, you can see minerals collected by local crystal seekers and unique specimens from the Gotthard Base Tunnel. Highlights include the world’s largest and only known piece of milarite. Another exhibition focuses on how flax seeds were processed into fabric: miniature figures and equipment illustrate each step, while a flax comb, spinning wheel, skein winder and loom are displayed in their original size.

The religious buildings also offer specific historical points of interest. The Sontga Onna Chapel in Camischolas houses a Gothic altar dating from 1517. The Sogn Vigeli Church in Sedrun has a massive tower built in the early 13th century. Putnengia Castle is a ruin that was once the seat of the Knights of Pontaningen. The Chrüzli Pass, in turn, was a historic link between Disentis Abbey and Einsiedeln Abbey. The chapel route lets you combine this kind of cultural interest with a longer walk.

Lake, swimming and other activities

At Lag Claus Surrein, there is a raft that crosses the lake, as well as various play structures on the shore for children. In warm weather, visitors can swim in the cool water. Food and drink available there include hot and cold dishes, snacks, salads, a changing selection of cakes, ice cream, and hot and cold drinks. Bogn Sedrun complements the water activities with a 25-metre pool that is also suitable for fitness swimmers, as well as a children’s paddling pool. The wellness area features a Roman bath with steam and water baths. Check the current opening arrangements before your visit.

Selva has a nine-hole golf course with a tee shot over the Rhine. From Disentis or Sedrun, take the train to Tschamut; from there, it is a 30-minute walk to the course. Check train connections and the golf course’s seasonal operating schedule before travelling. If you are interested in gold panning, you need a permit in Tujetsch. You can obtain one from the municipal administration or the tourist information office in Sedrun; check the current local rules before taking part.

The Tujetsch culinary circular hike combines exercise with local products: you can buy produce from farm shops along the way. Participating shops and product availability may vary by season. At a Ustria along the route, you can also enjoy «Clau», an aperitif made with white wine from the Bündner Herrschaft and local syrup. Winter activities in Tujetsch include skiing and snowboarding; availability and operating schedules depend on seasonal conditions and opening hours.
