Giraniga: Walser Trail and Culture in Miraniga
Accommodation in Giraniga
From Giraniga, the eight-kilometre Walser Trail Obersaxen leads to Miraniga. Along the way are 23 information boards about culture and nature. They cover the Walser migration in the 13th century and the Walser language. The route thus combines hiking with insights into Walser history.
Hiking Trails and Cultural History
The Walser Trail crosses the Schlettertobel gorge on a 44-metre-long suspension bridge, about 16 metres above the stream bed. Conditions in the mountains can vary; check local trail conditions before setting out.
A longer route is the Meierhof–Giraniga–Miraniga–Surcuolm–Meierhof cultural hike. It passes through Giraniga, Miraniga and Surcuolm, is 17.8 kilometres long, and has 538 metres of ascent and descent. The hike is described as technically easy and is also rated as moderately difficult. Seasonal conditions can affect accessibility. Compared with the eight-kilometre Walser Trail, it is the longer hiking option, with elevation figures provided.
In the wider region, the cultural hike explores mills, castle ruins, natural bridges, language borders and agricultural land use as cultural and historical themes.
Art and Architectural History in Miraniga
The Chapel of St. Sebastian in Miraniga was built in 1668. Johann Jakob Rieg added its wall paintings in 1705. The remarkable Baroque altar is decorated with Rococo ornamentation and features a signed painting created by Father Fridolin Eggert in 1688.
The information boards along the Walser Trail cover Walser migration and language, while the chapel focuses on architectural history and art. The route’s cultural themes are therefore clearly distinct from the specific works in Miraniga.
Winter Trails and Seasonal Activities
The Kartitscha–Miraniga–Meierhof toboggan run is 4.10 kilometres long and designated as an easy sledding route. It operates seasonally. The winter hiking route from Obersaxen-Miraniga passes through a quiet mountain landscape and offers fresh mountain air. In winter, you can choose between a toboggan run and a hiking route, which offer different types of activity.
Cars are not allowed on the winter hiking trails on the route from Obersaxen-Miraniga, even when there is no snow. Check local signs and safety instructions. In winter, Restaurant Stai can be reached directly from the ski slope; if you plan to use this access, confirm current accessibility before your visit.
Fire Pits and Views
The PlĂ mpoort family fire pit is located on a mountainside in alpine pastureland southeast of Miraniga. You can reach it via the Walser Trail after 2.5 kilometres if you start southeast of Miraniga. On site, there is firewood, a grill grate, tables, benches and a drinking fountain; a small log hut has a toilet.
A nearby fire pit and playground can be used approximately from mid-May to the end of October. The nearby Sassli fire pit is also accessible on foot from Miraniga via the Walser Trail.
The Durchblickspanorama viewpoint is near PlĂ mpoort. It identifies the peaks of the mountain ranges opposite and offers a panoramic view.
