In Platta, hiking trails with a direct connection to the village and the Parish Church of St. Martin take centre stage. The routes vary considerably in length, duration and theme: from the short walking trail between Curaglia and Platta to the Via Lucmagn, designed to take several days. If you would like to combine a hike with a cultural theme, you can also find trails to the churches and chapels of Val Medel.

Hiking trails connected to Platta

For a shorter route, the easy Curaglia–Platta walking trail is one option: it covers 2.2 kilometres and takes about 40 minutes. Along the way, you pass an old stone bridge; the prepared trail then leads to Platta. Muschaneras is a circular route that requires considerably more time. It starts and ends in Platta, is 13 kilometres long, is rated moderate to difficult, and takes about five hours.

The Muschaneras route leads from the postbus stop in Platta via Drual towards Plaun Pardatsch. It reaches the old alpine huts at Muschaneras; from the alpine pasture, the view extends across the entire valley. After the alpine section, the trail descends steeply through alder scrub and woodland. From Acla, the route follows the left side of the Rein da Medel back to Platta. Another option from Acla is to take a postbus towards Curaglia; check the connection before you travel.

The «Churches and Chapels of Val Medel» themed trail has a different focus. The easy route covers 11.5 kilometres and takes about three hours and 46 minutes. It passes through Curaglia, Soliva, Biscuolm, Mutschnengia, Pali and Platta, and visits twelve larger and smaller places of worship in the valley. Along the way, the trail shares their stories of origin and art-historical treasures. The folding map «Baselgias e Capluttas dalla Val Medel» is available from the municipality, the village shop and the hotels.

For a longer route, the Via Lucmagn passes through Platta. It is 41.7 kilometres long and designed to take about three days; with a few detours, it is also suitable as a cycling route. The Via Francisca del Lucomagno is a different route: its final stage in Graubünden leads from Acla via Platta to Sogn Gions. The pilgrimage route follows the tracks of an old connection between Konstanz and Pavia.

The Parish Church of St. Martin

The Parish Church of St. Martin brings together a range of architectural and artistic features: the building is Baroque, while its bell tower is Romanesque. The church was first mentioned in 1338. Inside, there are two side chapels and two side altars. The wooden high altar was erected in 1760 and features stylistic forms of the Rococo. On the south façade is a painting of St. Christopher, created by Antonio da Tradate of Locarno around 1510. A visit to the church can therefore focus both on its interior furnishings and on a historic work on its exterior façade.

Snowshoe trail and travel connections

Snowshoe trail 610, the «Tegia Nova Trail», starts in Platta. The difficult route is ten kilometres long and takes about five hours. It crosses a historic stone bridge over the Rein da Medel and climbs to the chapel in Pali. Beyond the tree line, there are views of the peaks of Val Medel and the upper Surselva; on the descent to Platta, woodland alternates with open areas. The trail passes through a wildlife refuge zone: stay within the signposted corridor there. The route is marked, and a printed topographic map is recommended for visitors unfamiliar with the area. Take seasonal winter conditions into account when planning.

Postbus services run from Disentis/Mustér railway station to Platta all year round. You can reach the station from Chur on the Rhaetian Railway, or from Andermatt or Göschenen on the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway. This makes it possible to combine your journey with the hiking and snowshoe routes described here; check the timetable for your specific journey.
