Surcuolm is a village in the municipality of Obersaxen Mundaun in the Swiss canton of Graubünden and the Surselva region. When planning a stay, it is worth exploring the different things the area has to offer: these include hikes of varying difficulty, a snowshoe trail, views from Piz Mundaun and the village’s own history. If you are looking for a hotel in Surcuolm, you can consider whether nature experiences or cultural history will shape your stay more.

Hiking Trails of Varying Difficulty

The Witzweg in Surcuolm is an easy hike along the edge of the forest. Signboards invite you to stop and enjoy a smile. Another option is the 11.6-kilometre summit route from Surcuolm to Piz Mundaun, which is rated difficult. One section follows a forest and meadow path to the Bündner Rigi restaurant. The two trails are therefore quite different: the Witzweg combines an easy hike with humorous signboards, while the summit route is designed for a challenging outing.

The enduro tour from Piz Mundaun to Ilanz is another option in its own right. Between Surcuolm and Cuolm Sura, it includes an ascent of 240 metres. Route conditions and access supported by mountain transport can vary depending on the season; check conditions before planning your trip. This makes it easier to fit the tour into your trip’s schedule and season, without treating it as equivalent to the other hiking trails.

Snowshoe Trail and Alpine Panorama

The signposted snowshoe trail starts at the old sawmill above Surcuolm. From there, it passes through forest clearings, by old stables and across broad alpine meadows. Snow and avalanche conditions can affect access in winter; check conditions before setting out. The route crosses varied landscapes, so its character changes between the clearings and the open meadows.

The observation platform on Piz Mundaun offers unobstructed views of the Alpine panorama. Swisstopo Digirama panels help you identify mountain peaks, valleys, villages and alpine pastures. This means you can do more than simply take in the view: the panels provide clues for identifying individual landscape features. Surcuolm developed from a typical mountain farming village into a tourist destination and is connected to the Obersaxen Mundaun ski area on Piz Mundaun.

Village Character and History

The people of Surcuolm have traditionally spoken Romansh and been Catholic. This distinguishes the village from the neighbouring settlements of Flond and Luven. Surcuolm is home to the Catholic Church of St. George. A chapel dedicated to St. George, dating from 1603, was demolished on 25 April 1856 to make way for a new church. The new church was solemnly consecrated in 1858 by Auxiliary Bishop Albert von Haller.

Around the turn of the 20th century, successful people returned to Surcuolm and built substantial stone houses that shaped the village’s appearance. This building history adds a later phase to the village’s religious milestones: the return and the stone houses belong to a different period from the chapel’s demolition and the consecration of the new church. Together, these details give an impression of how Surcuolm developed over time.

Local Produce and an Audio Adventure Trail

Dubler in Surcuolm sells homemade dried meat and various sausages. If you are planning a visit, it is best to check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

The Hilarius audio adventure trail runs along the upper edge of Surcuolm, following a 3.5-kilometre discovery route. Wooden figures tell stories that can be played on a smartphone using a QR code. The tourism information office currently lists the trail as closed; check access before planning your trip. This allows you to take the attraction into account when planning, without assuming that a visit is possible.
