Buchrain offers a variety of options for a stay: the literary sculpture trail and the former parish church of St. Agatha offer cultural experiences, while the Reuss, the Rotbach and the wetlands are highlights for nature lovers. The season also plays a role in planning: some leisure activities on the Reuss and in Hinterleisibach are specifically summer offerings.

Culture between literature and village life

The literary sculpture trail combines 14 sculptures with literary works. The figurative pieces are made of stone and bronze. If you would like to learn more about the literature behind the sculptures, you can borrow the corresponding works from the library. This way, the trail brings together visual art and reading, which you can also enjoy independently of the walk.

Another cultural venue is the former parish church of St. Agatha. Since 2021, the «AltBar Bueri» association has used the church as a place to meet, enjoy culture and operate a bar; this use is currently planned to continue until 2029. The traditional Bueri Chilbi, held in Buchrain on the last weekend of October each year, is a regular part of village life.

The Beerday Bueri is scheduled for 24 October 2026 at the Dorfschulhaus Buchrain. Five Swiss craft breweries will present their beers there. As information about future programmes may change, check the event details before your visit. The Detektiv-Trail Buchrain offers another way to experience the village as a puzzle walk: it combines games, treats and puzzle-solving, and starts at the «Buchrain Dorf» bus stop.

The Reuss landscape and distinctive habitats

Buchrain’s Schachen is one of the richest parts of the Lucerne Reuss plain and contains numerous remnants of the former natural river landscape. The Rotbach also has a natural character: in many places, the stream is bordered by marsh vegetation. Its outer bends, with exposed soil, provide ideal nesting opportunities for various insect species and the kingfisher.

Together with the marshland areas of Rooter Unterallmend, the Iriswiese remains the most significant purple moor-grass meadow in the entire Lucerne Reuss Valley. This habitat is home to several endangered plant species, including orchids. South of Chänzeliweiher there is also an oxbow, which is an important refuge for some animal species. These landscapes give a stay in Buchrain a connection with nature that differs from the cultural offerings.

Paths and outdoor activities

The municipality has numerous walking, hiking, cycling and horse-riding trails. More than 50 benches are spread throughout the municipality, inviting visitors to stop and relax. For a sporting activity, the Cholbenwald has a Vitaparcours fitness trail with exercises for strength, endurance, flexibility and coordination. It is free to use and open around the clock.

The Rontaler Höhenweg was created by Buchrain together with Dierikon, Ebikon, Gisikon, Honau, Inwil and Root, as well as the LuzernPlus municipal association. There are access points and public transport stops along the trail, so you can also choose shorter sections. This gives you a different way to plan a hike than the exercises on the Vitaparcours: you can choose between a longer hike and a shorter section, while the fitness trail offers a fixed exercise location in Cholbenwald.

Eight groynes on the Reuss invite visitors to relax and picnic. In summer, the riverside barbecue areas offer opportunities to grill and eat outdoors with friends and family. The beach volleyball court in Hinterleisibach is also a summer offering, providing opportunities for sport and relaxation. The Vitaparcours is free and accessible around the clock; barbecuing by the Reuss and beach volleyball, on the other hand, are explicitly seasonal activities. This difference may be helpful when planning the timing of your stay.

Plan your arrival and stay

Information about public transport, Verkehrsbetriebe Luzern, the SBB timetable and nextbike is available for Buchrain. Use the timetable to check connections for your planned dates. If you are planning your stay around a particular activity, you can also take its timing into account: the Bueri Chilbi takes place on the last weekend of October each year, while the riverside barbecue areas and the beach volleyball court are listed as summer activities. If you are travelling in October, the Beerday Bueri, scheduled for 24 October 2026, is also a specific event date.
