Beromünster offers several ways to explore its history: the St. Michael Abbey District, the historic townscape, museums and cultural venues. There are also trails and walks with a range of different focuses. This lets you plan your stay around your interests—from medieval architecture and the history of printing to longer hiking and cycling routes.

Abbey District and Medieval Collections

The collegiate church of St. Michael is a Romanesque pillar basilica dating from 1036. Its distinctive features include the crypt and richly decorated choir stalls. Together with the provost’s residence, the treasury, the collegiate theatre and around 30 choir houses and benefice houses, it forms an abbey district that has grown over many centuries. The abbey treasury holds liturgical objects spanning more than 1,300 years; the abbey library preserves medieval manuscripts from the 11th to the 15th century. The oldest dated Swiss incunable is also part of the town’s history: it was produced in Beromünster in 1470 and is preserved in the abbey library.

A tour of the canons’ monastery includes the choir, choir stalls, crypt, sacristies and treasury chambers. Advance registration is required. The guided tour of the historic town takes in carefully restored and, in some cases, protected buildings from several centuries; it is offered year-round by prior arrangement. The options differ: the abbey tour gives access to specific interior spaces, while the historic town tour focuses on the town’s historic buildings.

Townscape, Printing History and Culture

The historic townscape, which is of national importance, was planned and built after the devastating fire of 1764. The Beromünster Castle Museum, housed in an 11th-century residential tower, offers another glimpse into the history of printing. The museum includes a reconstructed print shop. The Haus zum Dolder was a doctor’s house for more than 100 years; three generations of country doctors assembled a wide-ranging collection there.

The former buildings of the Beromünster national transmitter are now home to the KKLB Centre for Art and Culture. The buildings were converted into a cultural centre with exhibition spaces and studios; the former transmission facilities were transformed into a Gesamtkunstwerk. More than 100 artists have left their mark there to date. If you are interested in current exhibitions, check what is on before your visit. The collegiate theatre is also part of Beromünster’s cultural history; its association aims to support the region’s cultural scene and emerging artists through the theatre.

Trails, Countryside and Outdoor Activities

The Waldkathedrale in Schlössliwäldli is a formerly Baroque park with avenues of hornbeams and horse chestnuts. Two listed routes for longer hikes are described with different estimated walking times. One leads from Beromünster via Witwil, St. Wendel, Waldhuus, Vogelmoos and Älmenringen to Hildisrieden: it is 10 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of 3 hours 50 minutes. A break at the Vogelmoos pond is recommended. The second route leads via Waldi, Grüt and Schenkon to Sursee; the stated walking time for the 9-kilometre route is 2 hours 20 minutes. The distances and times give you a concrete basis for comparing the effort involved, even though the routes are not the same length.

The Beromünster Radio Trail is an open-air installation with seven listening stations and three audio stories. If you are interested in cycling tours, the Herzschlaufe Seetal is a 120-kilometre circular route that leads from Eschenbach LU via Beromünster to Lenzburg AG and back. The Wyna Trail connects Beromünster with Menziken and Gunzwil. Its marked routes are 2 to 10 kilometres long; information boards cover running, walking and Nordic walking. Alongside an audio installation and marked trails, there are also longer hiking and cycling tours. Check the route conditions before setting out on the Herzschlaufe Seetal.

Guided Experiences and Local Traditions

“Us em Näihchäschtli” is a theatrical tour that can be booked individually. At five locations, it tells the stories of five historical women; confirm availability before your trip. The Beromünster Ascension Day procession takes place on foot and horseback on Ascension Day. The pilgrimage route for walkers is 18 kilometres long and is followed by thousands of participants. A tradition more than 500 years old, the procession is also an expression of deeply rooted popular piety. At the Chääsbox in Beromünster, you can sample cheese specialities; the selection on offer may change.
