Grosswangen: Hiking Trails, Cycling Routes and Chapels
Accommodation in Grosswangen
Explore Grosswangen via its specific routes and historic chapels. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on a hiking route, a cycling tour or cultural and historical sites. The signposted routes differ in the places they pass through and their circular layouts; the chapels take you through various centuries of local history.
Hiking Trails and Cycling Routes
The “Zur Burgruine Kastelen” hike starts in Grosswangen and follows the idyllic Rot. A circular hike runs from Grosswangen via Unterwald, Laupach, Wellbrig and Brestenegg and back again. “Auf die Wanger Rigi” is also a circular route: it leads via Oberdorf, Oberhöhe and Leidenberg to Innerdorf and then back to Grosswangen. If you are interested in the nature education area, you can follow the hiking route of the same name. It leads there via the St. Anna Chapel and Gishubel. The places listed along each route make it clear which locations are included in its course.
The municipality has designated three cycling and mountain biking routes. One route leads via Huben, Liegernmatt, Wellbrig and Willisau back to Grosswangen; Ettiswil or Ostergau are listed as return options. A second route runs via Breiten, Oberroth, Roth, Rüezligen, Stettenbach and Wüschiswil to Huben. The third leads via Breiten, Oberdorf, Sigerswil, Sursee, the Baumeisterzentrum and Leidenberg back to Grosswangen. This offers a choice of different sequences of places, without combining the routes into a single circular route.
The QR Gschichtli Trail for Children
Since 1 July 2024, the QR Gschichtli Trail has also been available in Grosswangen. It offers children aged 4 to 12 an audio journey in nature. The approximate trail length is 1 to 1.5 kilometres, with ten stations to explore along the way. This makes the trail different in its described format from routes whose course is mainly marked by a series of place names: here, audio stories and stations take centre stage.
Chapels and Building History
In the St. Anna Chapel in Hinterfeld, a late Gothic statue of Saint Anne with the Virgin Mary and Child stands above the altar. The chapel was built around 1570 and rebuilt after a fire in 1929. The statue and the building history offer two different historical points of interest at the same location. The Josefskapelle in Oberdorf also has several construction phases: it was first built in 1679 and consecrated in honour of Jesus, Mary and Joseph on 16 May 1684. The building that still stands today dates from 1828 and was renovated in 2007.
The Oberroth Chapel is considered the oldest surviving building in the municipality of Grosswangen. Parts of its walls date back to a Romanesque church, probably built in the 12th century. The chapel is also a destination on the Lucerne Chapel Trail, which leads there via the Roman road. Since 1940, the chapel in Sigerswil has been dedicated to the patron saint of Switzerland, Brother Klaus, and was the first chapel in the canton of Lucerne to receive this dedication. In Stettenbach, the pilgrimage tradition goes back a long way: in 1624, Jakob Müller had a small chapel built there in honour of Saint Anthony, replacing an old wayside shrine.
The parish church of St. Konrad is part of the more recent history of the church. In 1857, the Grosswangen parish decided to build a larger church; the new parish church was built in the Neo-Gothic style. Together with the chapels, these sites show how different building periods, consecrations and religious traditions each have their place in Grosswangen.
Visitor Information and Lake Sempach

Around Lake Sempach, visitors can experience unspoilt nature, discover cultural treasures, enjoy local cuisine and take part in sports; these regional options complement the specific routes and cultural sites within the municipality.
