Neuenkirch: Nature, Chapels and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Neuenkirch
Neuenkirch combines nature on Lake Sempach with hiking trails, pilgrimage sites and a varied local history. These themes offer different starting points when planning a trip with an overnight stay: you can focus on nature and ponds as well as chapels, historic buildings or golf. Neuenkirch borders Lake Sempach. You can experience the nature around the lake on foot or by bike.
Nature ponds, forest and waterfall
Teufenweiher is a nature pond and is considered an idyllic place of tranquillity. The nature ponds near ChĂĽserainwald also shape the landscape: several of them provide habitats for many animals and plants. ChĂĽserainwald is the largest forest in the municipality of Neuenkirch. A distinctive plant in this woodland is the rare bog arum (Calla palustris); its only natural site in Switzerland is in ChĂĽsenrainwald.
Another trail leads from a specific starting point to a waterfall: from the LippenrĂĽti neighbourhood, a forest path takes you there. As access conditions may change, it is advisable to check the current situation before visiting. This lets you include the detour as a separate nature stop in your travel plans, alongside the ponds and forest.
Hiking trails with different highlights
The Niklaus Wolf Trail is a circular route around Rippertschwand. It starts at the Niklaus Wolf pilgrimage chapel and passes five stations. They tell the story of Niklaus Wolf’s life and also encourage visitors to reflect on their own lives. Allow about an hour for the circular route. It is also suitable for school classes.
The Neuenkirch Bible Trail combines a signposted route with a puzzle. It starts and ends at the Vater Wolf Chapel below the parish church. The trail leads through peaceful countryside and invites visitors to find parallels between biblical stories and their own life experiences. This trail is also suitable for school classes; its puzzle offers a different focus from the life-story stations on the Niklaus Wolf Trail.
A longer regional route starts at the parish church in HellbĂĽhl, in the municipality of Neuenkirch: the Lucerne Chapel Trail leads through the Rottal valley via Ruswil, Buttisholz and Grosswangen to Ettiswil. It connects 17 churches and chapels and is considered a historical and cultural experience. The routes in Neuenkirch therefore range from an approximately one-hour circuit around Rippertschwand to a trail connecting several places.
Churches, chapels and local history
St. Ulrich Parish Church offers several historical milestones: it was rebuilt in the late Baroque style in 1765, extended and rebuilt in 1939, and last completely renovated in 1993. Below the parish church stands the Niklaus Wolf of Rippertschwand pilgrimage chapel, dedicated to him. His grave is inside the chapel and is visited daily by worshippers from across Switzerland and neighbouring countries.
The history of the pilgrimage chapel can also be traced through several dates. It originated from the lower church, to which Niklaus Wolf’s remains were transferred in 1952. In 1966, the chapel was renamed the Father Wolf burial chapel; since 1982, it has been known as a pilgrimage chapel. The annual religious celebration in honour of Niklaus Wolf takes place on the first Sunday in September in the adjacent church square.
Adelwil Chapel developed into a pilgrimage chapel, attracting people with both small and more significant concerns. The present-day chapel was built between 1610 and 1618. Between 1624 and 1634, Lucerne painter Kaspar Meglinger created a cycle of paintings for it depicting the lives of Saint Gallus and Saint Einbeth. The chapel hosts annual May devotions and a service on the feast day of Saint Wendelin, 20 October. A joint open-air service for the Sempach and Neuenkirch parishes is also held there annually on a Sunday in late August. Check the specific date before your visit.
Wartensee Castle adds a medieval dimension to the area’s history: its predecessor served as the residence of a Habsburg bailiff responsible for the lake. His duties included overseeing ship traffic between Sursee and Sempach. Today, Wartensee Castle houses various artists’ studios.
Golf in Neuenkirch
Neuenkirch also offers golf at Golf Rastenmoos. The facilities include a 9-hole course, a driving range, a pitching green and a putting green.
