Ruswil: Baroque Church, Village Centre and Moorlands
Accommodation in Ruswil
Ruswil is set in a pre-Alpine hilly landscape. The parish church, main square and buildings spanning several centuries give the village a distinctive architectural history. Moorlands, protected landscapes and hiking trails offer further ideas for planning your trip – from a stroll through the village centre to a longer hike.
Baroque architecture and historic village centre
St Maurice's Parish Church is a monumental Baroque building on a hillside terrace. Niklaus and Jakob Putschert built it in 1781–83. In the village centre, homes, businesses and inns stand close together at the foot of the slope. The main square has a small-town feel, with notable features including the Mauritius Fountain, renovated in 1955, and late Neoclassical residential and commercial buildings.
Smaller buildings also reflect different eras. The late Neoclassical mortuary chapel, with its Tuscan columned portico, was built in 1843. The rectory is a grand masonry building with a hipped roof, built in 1635–55 and restored in 1983–85. The historic Rössli inn is first mentioned in 1575.
Chapel Trail and local history
The Lucerne Chapel Trail follows an old country road, parts of which date back to Roman times, and connects a total of 17 churches and chapels. Along the route, you can enjoy local produce from various farm shops for refreshment. The trail thus places Ruswil's architectural history in a broader cultural context.
Soppensee also tells a story of the distant past: prehistoric finds show that people lived by the lake around 10,000 years ago. The lake formed after the last Ice Age and lies on the border between the municipalities of Ruswil, Buttisholz and Menznau. Its shoreline is subject to a cantonal protection order. The areas around Soppensee and RĂĽediswilermoos are popular destinations for day trips.
Moors and protected landscapes
Rüediswilermoos lies between Ruswil and Rüediswil; its expansive agricultural land continues into the Rottal valley. Forenmoos in Sigiger Forest is a raised bog listed in federal inventories. Rüediswilermoos, Ämmehoger and Stäublig are designated landscape protection zones.
The Stäublig pond landscape provides breeding grounds for common frogs, common toads and smooth newts. On sunny, windless days, you can spot up to ten different dragonfly species there. Näb de Flue meadow is a very steep, south-facing semi-dry grassland. Typical plants include upright brome, quaking grass, restharrow, milkwort and wild thyme; flowering varies by season. In the locally significant Bränte nature reserve, you can observe, among other things, bellflowers, perforate St John's wort and centaury, as well as wall brown and burnet moth butterflies. Flowering and wildlife sightings there are also seasonal.
Compare hikes by distance and duration
The Ruswil hiking trail overview includes 14 routes covering the municipal area in every direction. The hike to Soppensee is listed as 9.7 kilometres and approximately 3 hours and 6 minutes. “Into the Wild South” is shorter, at 5 kilometres and around 2 hours and 31 minutes. These figures provide a practical guide when comparing the two walking times; conditions on the trails may affect the duration of either route.
Other tours vary in theme and approximate duration: The hike through RĂĽediswilermoos follows in the footsteps of peat cutters and takes about 1 hour and 48 minutes. The walk to Bielbach Falls takes around 1 hour and 56 minutes. The route to GauchsrĂĽti, described as an orchid walk, takes about 2 hours and 19 minutes; allow around 2 hours and 37 minutes for the hike to Foremoos raised bog.
Swimming, golf and cycling route
Badi Ruswil is an unheated outdoor swimming pool with a swimming pool. Golf-Rottal has a pitch-and-putt short course and an indoor mini-golf facility with 18 challenging holes. If you are interested in a cycling route, the Sursee–Sempach–Sursee scenic route is another option: it climbs uphill to Ruswil and offers impressive views of the Alps.
Getting there and transport links
During peak hours, the Ruswil–Lucerne service runs every 15 minutes. There is a half-hourly connection to Wolhusen railway station. Check the timetable when planning your specific journey.
